Grade 4 Lesson 12 I cleaned my room
« on: September 29, 2011, 02:44:19 pm »
(for real heads / cartoon bodies book)

Here's a lesson plan in a box, well... a ppt.

1. Use ppt and explain how to form the simple past tense.  (also cover went and did)
2. Book stuff.
3. Play the game in the same ppt.

Students will each make a timetable.  The left hand column will all be the same, but they should all put the 2nd column's sentences in different spots.

The whole idea is they have to try to guess each other's timetables (as they all have the same 5 answers, just on different days) The first student to get three correct guesses will "level up", and move to a different part of the room.

Have 4 different areas with all the students starting at one.  The last area can only hold one student, and is the king.  Have some fun when a challenger for the king comes.

Thanks for the ppt! (Which I have now mutilated to suit my class level). I'm going to play the body game at the end of my class:
1. Split into teams, draw a torso on the board for each team.
2. Get 2 volunteers to come up from each team (or do 1 team at a time). Tell them an action.
3. Get the class to ask, 'What did you do yesterday?' then have them perform the action.
4. The team has to answer together in the past tense eg., ' I played soccer!'
5. They roll the dice 1=eyes 2=mouth 3=nose 4=hair and ears 5= arms 6=legs.

1st team with a complete body/monster wins, noise is guaranteed!

Key phrase and vocab sheet.
Not exciting, I'm afraid!

Here's a worksheet for practicing the past tense. Students need to look at the pictures and then use the words in the table at the top of the page to fill in spaces.

I've also attached a hidden picture game, which should easily take up the last 10 minutes or so of class.

I pulled this from a Grade 5 lesson but it worked pretty well for my 4th graders.

I used this video as motivation.

I passed out the lyrics handout before playing the video.  My kids enjoyed it, maybe a bit fast.

I'm so bored of playing ppt games so I tried this out today and it was great. I'm using it with my after school classes now as a review and the younger kids really like it too.

Thanks!

Easy past tense practice. Before I showed the example sentence I let them make some of their own. It's just a quick review to make sure they knew the right words for the game that I posted earlier.

Hey guys

here is an intro ppt that I made for lesson 12. it helped the students learn the regular past tense (ed) as well as the key phrases for the lesson. i used it to begin my lesson. My students are average, but were all very aware of this concept prior to the lesson due to their time in academys!

enjoy!

A game that worked really well in my class:  you need some flashcards with things like 'soccer, grandfather, TV, Jeju-do etc' so you can make logical past-tense sentences with the key expressions, eg, I visited.... I played... I went ...

the kids are split into four teams and one student per team must act out the card or describe it in English without saying the word. The team gets 2 points for guessing what is on the card, and an additional 3 for making a successful sentence in the past-tense. You can make it a bit more fun by using a timer. My kids are low - moderate ability, so I had a PPT slide of the possible 'I visited...' 'I watched...' etc. just to help them along a little.

A nice change from PPT-based activities!

Easy first day stuff for this lesson:

This is a karaoke version of the Beatles' song "Yesterday" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp5LtLrEqI0&ob=av2n).Presents the song well and displays lyrics without looking amateur. I've attached a very brief PPT that contrasts some of the lyrics in past and present tense.

Another obvious one, but here is a link to a decent We Are Busy Beavers video on using yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Not the most inventive stuff but effective enough!

Here's a PPT about the 3 different sounds with -ed endings. The kids seem to "get it" so far. They make sentences in their n/b using the words on the last slide. Also here is a phonics game for this lesson.

I have included a vocabulary ppt (incl. spelling), plus a 2nd period review and a whisper/card game. Hopefully you can use these for the 2012 school year.
