Idioms or Slang Lessons
« on: October 03, 2011, 01:18:11 am »
I'm doing a language exchange with a university student. Her English is pretty darn good since she lived stateside awhile back. As a result she wants to concentrate on idioms and slang. Does anyone have any good lessons or resources for this? I also teach uni, so stuff that is more oriented to a large class would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

I tried to find a post that contained a file I'm using with a teacher at my school but I couldn't so I will upload it again.  It's a pdf called "Speak English Like An American".  I know you might not like it (especially if you aren't American) but I have found it very useful.  It contains many useful phrases organized by situations and layed out in the form of a text book.

If you want to give a few random British examples, do a search for Cockney rhyming slang. It's a lot of fun, and helps with rhyming.

I LOVE Speak English Like an American! I'm Canadian but my co-teacher absolutely loves it! She's near fluent but I've realized recently that her comprehension of idioms is low (which probably explains why she doesn't understand when I use them!) We usually do 1-2 chapters every day at lunch time. I highly recommend using it!
