High School - Lessons on Steve Jobs
« on: October 07, 2011, 10:45:49 am »
Fellow teachers,

I showed all 600 of my students Steve Jobs' Stanford speech with Korean subtitles last week. Many students stayed 5 minutes after class (a rare occurrence) just to see it through to the end. And this was before his passing. If you've got the time, I highly recommend you spend the last 10 -15 minutes of our showing them the video.

This video is so inspirational! I'm not sure that I'll have time to show all of it (hopefully part of it)
Thank you for sharing!

Steve Jobs Lesson

You'll need a lot of help from your co-teacher to translate.
I basically made this just to tell a bit of his story to my technical highschool students. I'm trying to motivate them that even though their situation is bad you can make good out of it. Some of my students are adopted(not that it's bad, but they feel out of place).
With his failures he was still able to over come, so i'm trying to get that point across to my students.

The real lesson part is at the end where they write their goals and what not. Just gets them to practice freely in English.

For recent 3days, we're meeting mourning messages and news on him.
And I'm thinking about using his story and his speech for my teaching practice.
This could be very useful for me.
Thank you.

Wow, this is actually a great idea. I usually show music videos that probably 70% of my classes would stay behind for, but this is awesome. Totally doing it! Thanks!

This is a great powerpoint! I, too, work at a technical high school and know exactly what you mean. Thanks!

Also, I made a powerpoint to go along with this lesson plan. Images and quotes were all found on Google!

This is a great idea!  It's very timely, I think my kids will really like it.  I took the idea of using the Stanford speech, as well as sungadio's ppt, and the article from breakingnewsenglish.com to make a 50 minute lesson with a focus on goals, inspiration and accomplishments.

Here is the slightly revised ppt (for the worksheet), the worksheet and the lesson plan.  I'll be trying it this week with a group of relatively low grade 1 high school students - it may seem a little ambitious, but I think with support from the teachers they'll enjoy this, and hopefully get a lot out of it :).

Thanks again for the great ideas!

Wow! I was looking for something to show my students about Steve Jobs. Thank you so much~

Also, there's an article on Teaching Kids News that really breaks down how Jobs contributed to the advancement of technology:

http://teachingkidsnews.com/2011/10/12/inventor-innovator-genius-steve-jobs-legacy/

Could be used as a reading activity for an advanced class.

I can't believe I did not think of this. Given how obsessed my students are with apple products and how great that speach is, I am thinking this will make for a good lesson even with some of my wilder students.

Tried this lesson with some of my classes (tech hs). The video seemed to be hit or miss and the assignment crashed if my CT refused to help.

This is a good idea ~ it would definitely go over my students' heads, but within the past week I have heard so much about Steve jobs from co-teachers, students, and others in the area (he was even a part of the sermon at a church I visited last Sunday...) it's definitely something relevant!
