Upcoming KOTESOL International Conference
« on: October 09, 2011, 06:36:24 am »
Are you going to the KOTESOL conference at Sookmyoung Women's University next weekend?  Stephen Krashen is the first plenary speaker on Saturday morning.  I'm curious as to how much he will chastise all of us about Silent Sustained Reading.  The Saturday morning plenary speakers in recent years, like Nunan for example, have been interesting speakers.  I'm looking forward to listening to Krashen's talk, going to the Extensive Reading Colloqium, browsing the book tables, listening to other speakers, meeting friends and going to other demonstration/workshop classes.

I'm planning on attending and I have a couple of friends who also will be.  I told my department head about it (GEPIK high school), and he seemed particularly interested in hearing what Krashen had to say, since he's such a controversial figure in Korea and elsewhere.

Generally I enjoy conferences like this, so even though it's my first KOTESOL conf., I'm looking forward to the event.  The International Asia TEFL conference this summer was a little bit of a drag since it was the week that Seoul flooded so badly, and a good quarter of the presenters ended up canceling their presentations... Too bad, because some of the presentations were insightful and very interesting.  So I'm hoping for a little better experience with KOTESOL.

If anyone's interested in checking it out and hasn't heard about it, here's the website.  http://www.kotesol.org/IC2011Event  I think early registration's closed now, but people can still register at the door for a slightly higher price.

I'm coming in from China for the conference - I can't wait to hear what Krashen has to say - I hope to see many of my friends there!

I'm planning on going but I'm not sure if I'll make it in time to catch Krashen's presentations, which is a bummer (coming from Daejeon and I don't get off work until 10pm the night before).  I did a research project during my undergraduate years on Krashen's monitor model of second language acquisition and his name was frequently brought up in many of my classes.

This will also be my first KOTESOL conference but not my first TESOL conference.  I went to one back in Hawaii, though the size of it pales in comparison to the conference here in Korea (I hear there will be 1,500+ attendees).

I hope I get a chance to chat with all of you and others as well!
