Nonghyup to KEB Remittance Issues
« on: October 19, 2011, 11:40:59 AM »
Hi,

A couple weeks ago I set up a Nonghyup Bank Account with online access with the help of one of my school's administrators (who doesn't speak any English and I speak very little Korean).  Yesterday, I set up an account with KEB for the automatic remittance by myself.  Upon arrival, in Yongin City, I found that no one spoke English there so I attempted to set up an account with the help of an intern at my school (who I called from KEB).  I set up the account (or so I think) and attached it to my Chase Account in the United States.

Today, I attempted to access my Nonghyup Account online and initiated a transfer to KEB and I have been getting this error message:   "We're sorry but we received a message which states that you cannot make a deposit. Please contact the corresponding bank."  I'm going to have my co-teacher contact KEB, but I was wondering if anyone has had this issue before?  Is there any reason for it?  I've heard of KEB not working at certain points, but I'm worried I set up the wrong account or something like that.  I didn't sign up for internet banking at KEB, so do I have to do a transfer from a Nonghyup ATM?

Thanks for your time!

I'm not 100% sure if this applies to your situation, but here's my two cents' worth: I bank exclusively with KEB.  When I set up remittances to my US account, they told me something about how foreigners here are only allowed to have one bank account that can make international transfers.  (I, too, speak very little Korean, so please forgive my vagueness on the subject.)  In order to make the transfer online, I had to get a special "passbook" account that is separate from my regular bank account and can ONLY be used to remit money back home.  They then had to disable international transferring ability from my regular account in order for the passbook account to function properly.

KEB has a special expat information hotline staffed by people who speak pretty good English.  I don't have the number offhand but I think you can find it on their website.  So assuming you can call during business hours, you might not even need your co-teacher's help to figure things out on this end.  Not sure about whether you will have to do anything special with NH  though.  Hope this helps!

Are you trying to transfer from NH directly into your Remittance account (ie. Easy One)? Not sure if you can deposit into that one from other banks. Try transferring from NH into your regular KEB checking account, and then from the checking account into your remittance account. That's what worked for me.

EDIT: Also, it took a few business days for my remittance account to start working.

You can transfer directly from your NH account into your KEB Easy One account - I do it all the time. I set my KEB account up a while ago, but I do remember getting a similar message when I tried depositing money into it the first time. It turned out that the first time I set it up, the KEB lady had not activated it properly (I think maybe I was registered for the account but something more needed to be done). But the KEB people at another branch helped me out, so I think just try going to a branch and asking them to check for you. Good luck!

The same thing happened to me. I use KEB to transfer money into my account in Canada. When I used another bank to wire money to a friend traveling on vacation, KEB disabled my online global transfer function. When I called the English hotline, I was told that foreigners are only allowed to use one bank for online foreign currency transfers.
