Animation class
« on: October 20, 2011, 11:40:40 am »
Hey everyone! For my 2nd semester after-school class, I've been doing an "animation class."
I thought I'd share what I've got so far.

The basic format is as follows:
1) introduction / greeting,
2) show the "preview" ppt and have the students think/talk about what the movie's about,
3) show the film,
4) "writing" ppt - in their notebooks / A4 paper,
5) "review" ppt,
6) worksheet,
7)  word search,
8) game

With some of the longer animations (~8-10min), I've stretched it out into 2 - 3 classes. The shorter films only 1 - 2.

Some of the beginning materials were pilfered from some other people's work here on the forum, so it's a bit uneven. The 1st class was really a mish-mash of Mr. Bean things. Around the 2nd/3rd class, I was able to find what worked for my students and kept that formula going.
I'm teaching 3rd & 4th grade, so I had to lower the level of the material quite a bit. Obviously feel free to edit as you need.

I'll upload what I have so far, and I'll try to upload the rest as I produce the material.

*Note: Most of the films I got from youtube, which I downloaded to my usb drive using keepvid.com. I'd recommend doing it that way, as youtube can be flaky sometimes and nothing's worse than 20 kids staring up at you going "Really? You serious? You got nothing?"

*Note 2: For the word search, I use Pokemon & Cheri fonts, both from dafont.com.

Can't seem to find the original I used, but that's the whole vid, ~11min.

Edit: Woops! I originally uploaded the worksheet before I had modified it. It should be good now.

For your first post i don't think all the ppt's are posted.... looking for "preview" and "writing".

Otherwise  thank you thank you thank you for all of this.  Exactly the kind of stuff I like doing :)

Yeah, the 1st class didn't adhere to the system that I have in place now. It was very much a "let's see what waygook.org has...k, looks good...edit a bit...k done."

But if you want to make them for that video, it's really simple.
Go to the youtube page for your video, copy and paste the name into keepvid.com, download, then open with GOM player (which should be on your computer).

For screengrabs, just hit Ctrl + C, then go to your ppt and Ctrl + V. It's really that simple, which makes GOM hands down the best video player for this kind of stuff.

Hope that helps!
And thanks for saying thanks :)

Edit: Can't spell.

Burn-E

Sorry to bug you again.

I seem to be having a problem with the above Burn-E ppt's.  They download and open but it appears that the images are corrupted and unreadable.  The only one that came out alright (minus 1 image) was the wordsearch maze ppt.

I don't know what can be done about this or if anyone else has had a similar problem with this...?

Hey Miss S,

I just downloaded the Burn-E review ppt to check it out; it seems to be working   :/
Maybe you could try to update / re-install Powerpoint on your computer? The ppts work on both my office computer and the classroom I teach in.

Sorry, I'm not really sure what could be done. If other people chime in to say it's not working for them, I'll try the screengrabs again, but otherwise it sounds like something's wrong with the computer you're using.
Is it possible you could download & check the ppts on another computer? Maybe your co-teacher's, or another one in your school?

jgmenator, awesome stuff!  This is going to save me a lot of time.  I really like the format  and flow of activities (I'm looking at the Mr. Bean / Sandwich one right now).

One tip: when taking a screenshot, open up mspaint and then CTRL-V (paste) into that.  Then, you can cut the part of the picture you want.  You don't have to paste an entire screenshot into

Great job on these lessons! I am so excited to use them in my after school class. The structure of your lessons are superb! I love that you introduce the video with a preview (teaser!), then the review is just perfect for my lower level students. And the bomb games and word searches are perfect for a second day review! Keep up the great work teaching the kids!
