Organizers Accused of Sexually Harassing Beauty Queens
« Reply #20 on: October 21, 2011, 02:20:18 pm »
And Koreans are always complaining about problems with foreigners.....take a look at yourselves!

So why is it okay for Koreans to do this to foreigners in Korea?  If a foreigner would have done this to a Korean it would have been the head story on the news and on the front pages of newspapers.  How these people think and act, will always boggle my mind!

I love the 'There's no bed in the hotel room!' line. I wonder how many of them they put to a room.

Once again S. Korea. You still have a long way to go. The police showed up and the organizer pulled out his wallet in front of everyone and bribed the police officer so they would leave....They left.

This is an accusation so nothing has been proven yet. Whether it really happened or not, why is everyone immediately jumping on the "Koreans sucks" bandwagon? Why is every single post on here "Koreans are stupid! Koreans don't have a sense of humor? Blah blah blah." If you hate Korea and think you're so much better than all the Koreans, go home.

Miss Guyana has posted some videos that back up what the Brit was saying. BBC News also interveiwed her. That said, this is probably as much a relfection of world beauty pageant culture as it is of flaws in Korean society. What makes this case particularly interesting is the tendency of Korean promoters to overstate their case and draw westerners' attention to things that have little appeal to them while all the while missing things that do have appeal to westerners (such as hotel rooms with beds in them).

So What are you trying to get at?  A couple weeks ago when there was the incident with the American soldier raping the girl in her dorm room.  Nothing has been proven (must be proven in court before he can be deemed guilt) but the public all says he is already guilty (which I think most people would agree with).  Don't get me wrong I am in no way defending that soldiers actions or saying he is innocent, it is a terrible thing that happened.  I would like to say that if Korean people would like to take that outlook on foreigners then how is foreigners taking that outlook on Koreans who are involved in these situations any different?  Answer me that?  I don't think anyone is trying to say all Koreans are like this, but when there is an instance of this happening when it is Korean committing crimes against foreigners then yes we should be able to speak our minds on the topic even if it includes some of the "koreans suck" jargon. No one in this thread has stated that they "hate" Koreans or korea, just like Koreans do not come out and say they hate all westerners because of 1 incident like I mentioned above. But in reality there are some "Koreans suck" and "westerners suck" jargon coming from both sides when incident like both of these occur.

I'm happy to answer line-by-line your statements.
This is an accusation that was made that mirrors the horrible experiences of many foreigners in Korea.  Everyone is not jumping on the bandwagon even though it is a big bandwagon made by the crushed souls of many foreigners who have come before.  Looking at the total posts it appears that Korea bashing only takes up a small amount.  Yada yada yada.  I love Korea and so do most people who come here but they want it to be more foreigner friendly so they vent in the vain hope that someday some Koreans will figure out they are wrong to believe foreigners are not human.  (Please note I said some as in a small minority.)  I am home.  :)
Hope that answers your statements in a polite way.  You have a good point about many foreigners complaining.

They just showed it on MBC.  It was only about 30 secs, but they showed the British girl saying her say.  I'm amazed it actually got on TV.

It finally made the English-language press.

BTW, mlcarn, do you not find it just a bit ironic that a few of the contestants followed your advice exactly, but upon realising that they hated "the Koreans" had trouble just going home?

Why is every piece of criticism towards Korea automatically read as "Koreans are stupid We hate Korea blah blah blah?"  Do you not criticize things in your own country and community?  If no one critiques anything there's never any progress and new ideas never get put out there.  Constructive criticism should be a welcome thing.

Anyway, interesting to see it made the English-language press.

I love the 'There's no bed in the hotel room!' line. I wonder how many of them they put to a room.

One blogger Brian actually went and double checked a couple of the hotels mentioned to see if they had ondol (heated floor sleeping) rooms. Respect for the legwork there. Anyway, one had none. Makes me seriously question: where did the bed go then?

At first I wondered what rooms they found in the hotel when the hotel didn't advertise ondol rooms.

But after looking around some more I learned they didn't stay at those advertised hotels but were moved to nearby motels when the reservations got screwed up.

There were a couple pics released on twitter of the rooms.  One had a mirror on the ceiling.

You know what this scandal needs?  Word that the motels had cameras in the room.  That seems like the next logical progression.

Ahhh, thanks for linking to the videos Brian, hadn't seen that.  Geez Louise.   :o

I'd like to add that while pageant competitions may be "sleazy," that blaming this incident on "pageants will be pageants" is ultimately another old blame-the-victim song and dance.  People should be able to enter competitions or take jobs without being harassed, period.  Beauty pageants aren't my cup of tea, but they are no exception.

The bag-confiscating at the airport was just f*cking creepy.  There are definitely situations where secret midnight runs are necessary if you are a foreigner in this country.  The videos are damning beyond just what it shows of the people directly running the pageant.  That the police would allow a translation for a foreigner to be obviously intentionally disrupted is pretty frightening.

I got a pm from someone threatening legal action. The pm said that false claims have been made about their pageant and that I should remove this thread. I'm not a mod so I'm not sure if I can/should delete this thread.

If you think you need legal advice consult a lawyer, if you want a thread pulled pm a mod, if you look the names, you will find a couple within this thread.

They can't do a thing unless the mods out your IP info, and even then they'd have a hard time proving anything.
