Hi, I have an open class coming up soon and I will be covering chapter 12 from the Thomas Orr textbooks. The name of the chapter is, "If the World were a village". The key expressions given in the lesson outline are, "I wish I could..... like her", "I wish I had a .....like him" and "I wish I were ....like you". So should I base my lesson on "Wishing" or "Global village"?

I'm quite nervous as this is my first open class. Any tips or links you could help me with will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ah, the dreaded Orr textbook, I'm using that textbook too, but unfortunately my classes are not that far into the textbook yet.

Hope you can find some ideas for your open class, because getting ideas out of this book is like trying to force blood from a rock.

Hi, I am just getting up to that topic now in the same awful book - did you have any luck making it interesting? I only have two weeks to cover the chapter so I'm splitting it into "I wish I could.." and "I'm looking forward to..." since I've already done world stuff for the "What is culture?" lesson. I can share some stuff I did for the other chapters if you want to trade ideas?

a little game you could do at the end of the open class could be a guessing game:

Using the idea of 'wishing', bring in some korean candy and hide it from the kids. Each student must make the sentence:

I wish you will give me ________ (candy name). The student(s) who guess correctly will win the candy you bring in.

For the beginning of your opening class, start of with the usual definition etc.
Then enforce the target language "i wish......." using a series of pictures and get the students to guess the answers.  E.g show a picture of Starcraft and students should respond by saying I wish I could play Starcraft.

just a few ideas.  If you feel you can't use them then that's fine. Don't worry too much about the open class, treat it like any of your other lessons and you'll do fine!
Good luck!
