G20 Lesson-They seem to like it.
« on: November 10, 2010, 11:52:50 AM »
This lesson is designed not to talk about the complicated and controversial topics being discussed at the G20, but rather why having the G20 in Seoul is so important to Korea.

Throughout the lesson, I explain to the students that Korea has grown from a very small economy to a very large economy in a short amount of time and that the world wants to know how they did this.  Also, I explain to students that not everyone in the world knows how modern Korea is (how many of you were asked stuff like, can you drink the water, are you going for Peace Corps and the classic question:North or South? when you told the folks at home you were going to Korea?).  I explain to students that this is the first time since the 1988 Olympics that the whole world is looking at Korea and seeing how much it has changed!  I'd love to know if anyone uses this lesson and how it goes!

I don't have a camera here or access to a scanner or I would.  I just told them to do anything!  I wrote on the board "4 things the world should know about Korea" and "PLEASE USE ENGLISH WORDS!"  They seemed to take off with it.  I get some big pieces of paper and markers to hand out too...they love the markers!  Hope that helps.

This is a really great idea. Thanks for posting it!

EDIT: I just found this video highlghting the G20:

It's in Korean so the students can catch the point quickly, unfortunately it means that I don't really know what the text says.

Economy certainly doesn't mean "how much money a country has." Economy is more like the sum of all the monetary transactions that go on in a country or to quote the dictionary "Activities related to the production and distribution of goods and services in a particular geographic region"
