Passport due to expire

My current passport is due to expire in June 2012, will I have to get a new passport to be able to get an E2 visa?

You can find out for sure by calling 1345.  That's better than asking here because you'll get different answers and none of them are from an official source.   That said, I'm pretty sure I read that you must have at least 6 months left on your passport beyond the expiration date of your visa.  So yes, you need to renew.

What is 1345? That doesn't sound like an actual telephone number at all.

Did you try calling it?

As a general rule, most countries want 6months left before your passport expires from the time you are leaving whatever country. If you want to renew a 12 month visa soon then it pay to sort a passport soon. Your best source of info is immigration directly, yes they have people that speak English, failing that, try the number above.

No because its not a valid British number.

I'm not trying to renew a visa, I am going to apply for a brand new visa. Obviously it looks like I will have to pay out £70+ for a new passport.

They gave you that number because they assumed that you were in Korea.

Probably, but being poor and unemployed at the moment wanted to avoid the expense right at this moment. Seems I would have to get a new passport to travel. Oh well, such is life these days.

Yes, I was hoping it could get one at later date but yeah I will have to avoid being cheap and get a new passport. At least the lovely money snatching British government will transfer my remaining months on to my new passport. How very kind of them.

Just annoyed at how much the government charges for things these days. I shall go to the postoffice to order a new one today. I'm planning on going to a main post office as the local one is owned by a very dittery old couple.

x1000!!
Oh, you're in the UK?
Then call your official government sources!
Why on earth do people think an internet forum of foreigners living in Korea is a reliable source of information on such important matters?

We teach EFL not ESL. Hagwon and "Private School" are not synonymous. Not everyone works in either a hagwon or public school. Immigration Question? Call 1345.

Really? That's cool, so you'll get a 5/10 yr passport + 7 months?

Well so they say, I think they can add up to +9 months. Generally we only get 10 year passport in the UK unless you are a child.

Have you ever tried calling anyone in a British government department? You get about 10 different answers from different people. Nobody knows what they are doing.

It's the same in Korea.
Still better than asking here.

I won't bother asking them, since government departments here are rude, charge you alot of money to phone them and don't know what they are doing.

Just assume I need a new passport.
