Someone please explain Pororo to me.
« on: December 01, 2011, 03:00:21 PM »
So...it's set in a 'wintry' wonderland.
It makes sense that the characters include penguins, a polar bear, and even a beaver (they're pushing it with that one), but what the hell are aliens, a dinosaur, and a dragon doing there? Where did Pororo get his aviator goggles from? Where did Pororo come from? Creative people like to push boundaries (and themes) but when you totally break out of a theme you end up with meaninglessness, imo (i.e. pretty much everything in Shrek makes sense within a certain context, I'm not getting that same feeling from Pororo). Is there meaning/reason to Pororo? I'm open to learning. If so, please explain.

...A children's cartoon.  What do you expect, a discussion on existentialism geared towards a seven year old?  Wile E. Coyote still orders from ACME.  Does that make sense?  Just take it for what it is...something to entertain children before life becomes crushing.  :)

A lot of the older stuff from the West was nonsensical but many of the newer cartoons (newer as in last 10 years) are set within a specific context and make sense within that context enabling an adult to enjoy them as well. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for reason/meaning from a children's cartoon...

The last thing I want is for my child to grow up associating "randomness" with "cool" when in reality his enjoyment of randomness would just be a deficiency in his ability to see and appreciate patterns.

Whatever, it ain't that ^ serious.

What doesn't make sense is why a 7 foot tall Wookiee would want to live on Endor with a bunch of 2 foot tall Ewoks.

Kids like aliens. Kids like dinosaurs. Penguins are cool.

Children's cartoons don't need a reason to be meaningless. They're about fantasy. I think Pororo also has educational elements, although I'm not entirely sure since I've never watched more than a minute of it.

Does it make sense that a talking sponge lives in a pineapple at the bottom of the ocean? And that he works at a burger joint on the ocean floor? No. Does it matter? No, because it's funny and kids enjoy it.

I'm not sure if it was your original intention, but you sound like the stereotypical foreigner coming into Korea and acting like its culture is inferior to your own and that you are better because you're foreign. It's a children's cartoon. Get over it.

Many children's cartoons (especially fantasy) make sense within a certain context/bigger theme. I'm wondering whether or not Pororo does. I could just as easily be talking about Spongebob...but we're in Korea, girl, not in the US and my son watches Korean TV!

Lmfao. Yes, this culture is so inferior to my own supreme culture...oh wait, what is my culture? I've lived so many places and hung around so many people my culture is a mix of a million cultures...and I've criticized each and everyone...so...

Since ya give advice, here's some advice: when you grow up and experience the world you will be free to criticize each and every culture as well as enjoy things from most of them. Next time try and hit the nail on the head, you're making dents all over the "wall" of my post!

Makes perfect sense.  Originally, the planet was going to be filled with Wookies, but George Lucas wanted something cuter to sell more toys.  And thus the teddy bears Ewoks were born.

Maybe he just liked being taller than everyone else and being told he was handsome all the time.

Oh, wait...

You've never watched South Park, have you?

Also, yeah, seriously. Why is anyone in this thread (myself included, unfortunately) wasting time trying to explain or justify the fact that children's television programs are generally weird and nonsensical? I mean, do none of us have anything better to do?

Time to go watch Adventure Time.

Personally, I'm just impressed you've been able to decipher Pororo at all. It'd help to know a little about it for work's sake y'know. I've not been in the mind to sit down and watch the thing, and Wikipedia has failed me on getting up to speed with the characters and whatnot (hard to pin a name to a face when there are no images on the non-Korean web; I smell copyright trolling).

If you think the youth of the West are learning to not equate "random" with "cool" due to a higher level of reason, meaning and internal consistency in the television they watched as children, then I would wager you are sorely mistaken.

Makes about as much sense as a sponge living in a pineapple under water with his cannibal crab boss selling crab burgers.

And that slightly underdressed Starfish who keeps hanging around?  Definetly something fishy going on.

The fact Kron is a dinosaur is relevant because they make a big deal about him being the only one and not having family.
He also can't really speak and just says Kron Kron all the time (hence the name).

Pororo wears googles and that silly hat because he often tries to fly and loves planes.
