Just to note, though I'm sure it's been noted a few times throughout the topic... many NETs are a waste of money when they only teach 30-50 kids per class, 3 classes, for 40 minutes a week.

I teach 20-30 kids for 40 minutes a day, 3 times a week (sometimes four depending on random schedule changes that are never explained to me). People in similar situations, or people who teach more often than I do, are certainly valuable.

A lot of reactions to this article have been... well, reactionary. NETs can really be a colossal waste of money.

There isn't enough exposure to English. I think atleast 30% of their waking hours has to spent in listening and speaking in English. Most NET teach a class once a week for 45 minutes to 30 odd students. If they are lucky they'll have an afterschool class or hak(g)wons.

Is it really the case that Korean teachers get paid 4.5 a month?

I was told last week by my co-teacher that I must report for desk-warming. Sit in an empty school.
Also, I must submit a report to her stating the work that I have been doing
as proof to her that I have not being quote 'wasting my time', (Tools for teaching and lesson plans in detail).

Of course, my contract states that I should be present. I am being paid to work for that time.
It's the general distrust that grinds my gears.

All this, whilst the school's Korean teachers are enjoying lengthy breaks
and getting paid what?

Public school.

I am lucky if my best students can string one coherent sentence together in English.
That goes for 95% of the Korean teachers too.

I recently saw some rather hilarious footage of an 'English teacher' robot
being used in a Korean class room. What a joke. Good luck.

But, robots don't receive a salary, and never complain. Right? Ha ha!

At a certain point yes. They start lower than ESL teachers are, but after several years, it's been reported by numerous people over numerous forums and blogs that korean teachers they know are making considerably more in public schools. At the 7-8 year mark, I've read several people stating the teachers they know are making 5-5.5 a month.

That is not a bad salary even with paying standard taxes in Korea. real teachers get decent vacations. I'd like to see if some F-series or dual citizenship people could get their Korean up to snuff and pass the exams and maybe get on as real English teachers at some schools. That may be the way ESL is headed in Korea if they're going to stop hiring E-2s at public schools.
