help first open class
« on: November 03, 2010, 12:46:13 PM »
Hi guys, I was hoping I could get some help. I have been told I have my first open class next week arrrghhh. We are up to a unit called "No nature, No Future." The unit focus has these sentences - You have to recycle paper. I'm sorry, I forgot. / I try to use less water I'm proud of you.

I have no idea as my school is very strict, and has told me from day one I must teach exactly to the book. I can see it detrimental to the student's learning. Firstly, they are bored out of their minds and secondly, the majority of them play up because of that reason, and I don't blame them!!!. Anyways, enough whining  ;D. Have any of you taught this lesson, what were some fun things you did with students.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!

thanks

I'd really like to help but I use a different textbook and since I'm an inexperienced new teacher, I don't have any idea on top of my head. Having to follow the textbook is a big problem for me too. I'd suggest you go through some materials posted by other teachers here and see if you could use their ideas and modify their ppt to suit your own purposes. I've been doing that and it really saves me, otherwise I'd have run out of ideas weeks ago. Thanks to the kind people who share their lessons here!  :)

i just posted a lesson on global warming... i know you are meant to teach exactly to the text book but maybe have a chat with your co-teacher about trying to make things different for you as you are a foreign teacher and they should use the fact that you cannot speak Korean as an advantage... feel free to use the global warming lesson or take bits from it!

I'm in the same boat! Open class Nov.11th. I also use that book and we're in the same chapter. Luckily I can teach whatever I want, but I don't know what to do! These are my advanced students and I always worry that my lessons are too easy for them. Good Luck! Hope it goes well.

How about a virtual tour of a recycling plant? You can Google several of these. You may also brainstorm ideas about what should be recycled and why. Find out what they do to help the cause (Turn water off while brushing teeth, putting waste in proper places, etc). The students could make conservation posters and share them with the class.

umm hey guys, I've been told open class is now end of November! they sure love changing things around here right :-)

Thank you for your lovely ideas, but here is what I've proposed to do.
show a short WALL E clip about the environment
go over key vocab with a mini review game
make a mini poster and get them writing down a sentence they have learned (in their groups) present to class
and if we have time........
a game of jeopardy to test all knowledge learned over the course of the unit

Watch out about drawing/coloring in class.  I have been told Korean teachers don't particularly appreciate it i.e they'll think it's a waste of time.  Run that bit past your CT.  Something like pictionary though is fine...

thanks for the advice! My teacher suggested a poster we are going to use newspapers to find pictures related to the environment. I am a bit worried about time but we will trial it with the other classes and might tweak it i.e. download pictures for them already and they can just glue on the paper already

thanks Rufus :)
