Hey everyone, sorry for the late update!  Just got back from Indonesia.

Here is the latest updates on Andrew

Message from Andrew's parents in Ottawa:
"Well it has been a good week for Andrew. His tracheotomy has been removed and as a result he is speaking better. He had his "food test" but wasn't able to easily swallow everything so he only can have water by mouth at the moment. They will be re-doing the food test early next week, perhaps tomorrow to see if he does better swallowing the peanut butter and chocolate pudding. If so, they will be slowly introducing solid food. He still has the PEG tube into his stomach and I have no idea when that will be removed.

Andrew now spends considerable time out of bed in "his" chair and he is being wheeled around his ward and even to the in-hospital Tim Hortons by his nurses. Apparently he is on the waiting list to be moved to Rehab but we are not sure how long the wait will be.  Andrew is certainly anxious to go to Rehab which is a good sign since his progress will no doubt depend on his effort and determination as much as it will on the skill of the rehab staff.

Love Paul and Pauline"

Message From Andrew's sister, Jessica Markle:

"To Everyone in the Facebook world that has been along with us for Andrew's road to recovery,
This is my first official update since my brother has been back in Canada and I apologize for this taking so long I just wanted to wait until there was some solid, positive changes to tell you all about. Andrew has now been in Ottawa for almost 3 weeks now and settled in pretty quickly. His flight from Korea was pretty much stress free and my parents were thrilled to have him back home on canadian soil and I got the feeling that he was also :) He is in an isolated area of the Neurosciences unit of the hospital and is under supervision still due to a few complications from his surgery in Korea, just for precautions :) In the last few weeks he has made great improvement not only in his strength and nourishment intake but also in his comprehension and speech. We are taking it a day at a time and trying to guide him with the comfort of familiar faces and we think the familiarity of the english language being spoken by the doctors and nurses, all in all he seems a lot more comfortable :) Visiting is still very brief as he gets tired but a few of Andrews very close friends have came to visit briefly in the last week. Thank you to you EVERYONE that has left msgs for Andrew , you guys are all so awesome and genuinely amazing people, it was a comfort to me and my family to hear all these amazing things about my brother! Andrew is aware of the Facebook page that was created and is very eager to take a look! Thank you also to EVERYONE who has donated to the support group for the costs of everything , from the bottom of my heart I can't thank you enough and feel so blessed that my brother is loved by so many. To all those who don't even know him...THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND AND THOUGHTFUL GENEROSITY. Andrew is on his road to recovery and I thank god everyday that his life was saved♥ no words can express my gratitude to all those who contributed to that , especially Richard Brizan . You are a hero :)
keeping andrew in your prayers always is the only thing I asked of you all who are reading :) Bless you all xo

Jessica"

I sent a message to the parents and will be posting a donation update this week :)

Glad to hear that Andrew is doing so much better.  I haven't been on waygook in awhile and just saw this today.  I would like to send a contribution, but am inexperienced at account transfers in Korea.  I didn't see Korean Exchange Bank or KEB on the list.  Can anyone tell me if it is possibly listed just as "Exchange"?  If someone could help me out with that, I'd be more than happy to send in a donation.

Donation Update!
Sorry it's been awhile, I've been out of town.

The donations are now at ₩14,160,780, this is including a very generous amount of around ₩1,000,000 ($900) by the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa.  Thank you so much!!  Andrew you are truly loved <3

I got to speak with Andrew last night!! He was in such high spirits and chatting up a storm to me.  His voice was a little labored but seemed to understand everything I was saying.  It really made my day!
Just thought I'd share :)

Yeah, on some ATMs (maybe Woori or Nonghyup?) it's definitely listed as "Exchange." Also, every ATM will give you a chance to cancel the transaction at the last moment in case you've made a mistake, so don't worry too much. To do the transfer, select "Exchange" as the bank, enter the account number and the dollar amount, and wait for the machine to process the info for a moment. You'll get a confirmation screen that lists all of the info for the transfer, including the account holder's name. If the wrong name shows up (ie, not Richard Anthony Brizan or some variation thereof), you can cancel the transfer then, no harm done.

@smores85 - I'm not sure why you couldn't find it.  It should be listed as Korean Exchange Bank. Was this at a bank machine?

No it's not listed as KEB on a bank machine. It's "외환은행".

Nothing much to report that's new.  Andrew is starting rehab/physio this week and he has a very positive attitude about it.  He can't wait to be able to walk again, he is getting bored laying in bed all day!  He is able to eat solid foods now, and was pretty excited to eat pizza and donuts haha.  Will keep you updated on his rehab/physio!

Thanks for the help.  It was a Woori bank ATM.  I'll get some money sent by this weekend.  Hope Andrew continues to get better.  It sounds like he's a trooper!!

The donations currently sit at ₩15,105,085!

Part of an email from Andrew's parents:
"Andrew was transferred from the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital to the Rehabilitation Ward at the General Campus last Tuesday.  The rehab ward is a little farther for Pauline and I to drive to see Andrew every day but we don't care. We are just happy he is in the final stage of recovery although we don't know of course how long this will last or, to be completely honest, whether a 100% recovery will be the result. One of the nurses told us he would be in rehab a minimum of 6 weeks and perhaps beyond 12 weeks.  Andrew was very depressed/disappointed when he heard this because he was thinking in terms of a few weeks duration. Hopefully he will be able to come home on weekends soon!"

Hope everyone is enjoying Spring Vacation :)

It was known early on that we don't know how he hurt himself and why he was in a coma.

It's sinister to imply that he doesn't deserve money because we don't have enough details. We have enough details -- he's in a coma and needs donations. Relying on someone in a coma to provide details before you donate is somewhat illogical.

I gather that he's out of a coma and talking but had (has?) amnesia. Does anyone know if he can remember what happened now? It wouldn't make any difference to how I feel about having donated money - like I said before, I don't really care if he fell down the stairs while plastered or got mugged coming home from a wine & cheese - a guy who needs help is a guy who needs help. Still, I'd be very interested to know how a guy wakes up in such a condition.

I forgot that he had woken up! It'd be interesting to see if he remembers or knows anything of what happened.

It's very common to not remember what happened leading up to a head injury. I got attacked and kicked in the head a few times a few years ago on my way home (sober) from a night out and I have no memory of the 5 minutes or so before it happened. I only know what happened from witnesses.

Edit: The guy is getting better, that's the main thing.

Just joined waygook and saw this, I'll make a point of donating once I get my Korean bank account and first paycheque in a week or so.

"There, but for the grace of God, go I."  This kind of thing can happen to anyone at at any time, I can only hope I would have such caring friends if something similar happened to me.  (Though living deep in the mountains here in my tiny little town, I likely wouldn't have made it to a hospital in time; not to mention I don't have a cellphone yet to call anyone if I wake up with suspicious lumps on my head.  Frightening thought.)

I can't believe people earlier in the thread were suggesting not donating if his injury turned out to be due to heavy drinking.  What an astonishingly self-righteous attitude.  I've never met a NET in Korea who hasn't been way too drunk at least once.

Cheers, Andrew, from another ex-Ottawa resident.  Best of luck with the recovery.
