I was just going to post this. My VP had already announced an emergency protocol at school. Not sure what might come of this.

Kim Jong Il has died

My co-teachers just informed me that Kim Jong Il passed away. The environment is a little overjoyed in the office.. The information was just released in Korea, although the death happened last Saturday at 8:00.

How will things change?

How about checking if this has already been posted.  Also, how about not double-posting in 2 different sub-forums?

Reunified Korea was supposed to happen when his father died, when Kim Dae Jung was voted president, and when Ban Ki Moon took over the UN.

I'm actually a little concerned that his son might do something dramatic to try to prove himself and seize power, in a sense.

Reunified Korea will come very soon....

Pretty bold prediction!
It will be interesting to see.
I think the current state of NK's economy will prevent SK from agreeing to reunify anytime soon.

Guess his evil son will just carry on his evil work. So sad that it probably won't make any difference to the lives of the poor people of NK, in fact it may just make it worse.  :(

Reunification would be the very worst thing to happen if it came soon. It would cripple SK's economy.

It's interesting times on the Peninsula, for sure.  There's so many different directions things could take that it's hard to predict--not that I'm a major expert on anything anyway.  Would love to hear frmo long-timers or people who've really studied Korean/East Asian history/politics and have some perspective to put on this.

I'd be lying if I said my first thought wasn't "Damn, I hope this doesn't f*ck up the currency exchange rate," but let's hope the impact is limited to the economy and doesn't escalate into something worse.

There's another dent in the exchange rate.

Yeah, just saw that.   :(

What's everyone's opinion--transfer what you've got now while it's still worth something or wait for things to even out?

No.  Now I'm going to go start a thread on waygook.org to tell everyone about it.

Do you think NK will be better off?

Not sure.  Let me start a thread on that, as well.

Now I want to expedite my planning to come work in Korea in January... perhaps I am a bit off.

If anyone is interested, as this seems to be the trending thread on the issue, here are some videos of the press release out of NK.
