Winter Camp for Elementary grade 1+2...help!
« on: November 23, 2010, 02:55:00 pm »
Hi all,

I've been teaching grade 3-6 with no real problems all year but now my co-teachers have told me that they want me to plan a 1 week winter camp for grade 1+2 and as sweet as these little guys are they don't understand any English except 'Hello' pretty much.

Can anyone give me any ideas they may have? At the moment I'm looking at phonics and songs but I want to keep it fun for them, so maybe some ideas of things they could make or some xmas/winter movies to watch??

Any help is appreciated! :)

I think the little ones are the best camp!  So cute and sweet!

All in all, we cover:
-Greetings and how are you
-Alphabet
-Numbers and colors
-The body (I have # _____________.)
-Animals  (It's a ____color____  ______animal______)

We always sing and dance, including Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, the Hokey Pokey, If You're Happy and You Know It

We also cook on one day.  In the past we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but this time I think we'll be doing mac n cheese.

I have a book and materials prepared if you want any of them let me know.

Hi there,

I'm in the exact same boat! I've never taught grade 1-2 and frankly am at a loss for what to do for them. If anyone is willing to share their ideas that'd be fantastic

In the past when you did the cooking lesson, what did you teach them before hand?I think making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches sounds really fun. There is the kids song "Peanut, Peanut butter, Jelly" that would be fun to go with it.

check out starfall.com for alphabet/theme worksheets and activities

you can have them do crafts: paper santa claus, christmas cards, cut out candy canes, mazes, etc

I've been using these songs in my after school class for years one and two.  Then i incorporate them into Simon Says games to have them practicing listening.  It seems to be working and now they have really broadened their body vocab.
