You've just gone too long without Mexican food.  Every time I've gone (3x's) the service has been beyond terrible and the prices are quite high.  Never going again.

Wut? Is this a restaurant? Where is it? What is good? This post is contributing about as much to this board as I am contributing to the Korean National Pension Scheme. (<---Oh yes i did)

But srsly in the future when you start a thread use more than 4 words.

*Slow clap*

Looks like someone's almost reached her minimum post requirement for downloading privileges!

But anyway, On the Border is ok. Not great, but ok. I guess I should be grateful they don't put cheese whiz in the tacos. (Yes, that has happened.)

I once ate a meal cooked by a very old mexian grandmother, at a restaurant in a tiny town in southern Arizona that was not so much a "restaurant" as it was "somebody's house!"  One of the best meals of my entire life.

The real reason to go to On The Border is because they'll make you a mojito. It won't be a great mojito, but in Korea you can't be too picky, unfortunately.

There are heaps of Mexican restaurants in Korea.  I've run into very obscure ones hidden so far away from Itaewon I guarantee no one else here has been there.  For example there's one near Hankuk University of FS that I've NEVER heard a waygook mention before.  Whether or not it's as authentic as the guy "a stone's throw from Tijuana" claims it should taste like is subjective.

You gotta get out more, if you didn't know there was Mexican food in Korea I can only imagine how many other things you've been missing out on.  This isn't the 90's anymore.

I've been to OTB a few times.

Before this thread turns into another circle jerk about how Mexican food should taste like UNDERSTAND it is Tex-Mex they are NOT selling Mexican food.

Having said that I DO think it is better than most south of the border joints in Korea and I DO think it is way overpriced.  My girlfriend got a $20 Margarita and I've had better margaritas in San Diego for < $5 (there is NO excuse for screwing something like that up since it's a chain FROM the States).  Man that watered down swill reminded me of college when we'd just throw whatever booze we had into a fancy glass and call it classy because it wasn't Natty light.

Food was decent.  I've had the fajitas, chimichangas, and burritos and they were all pretty good.  The refried beans are too salty and the Spanish rice is downright awful.  They score points as being one of two joints in Korea that serve an actual LIME with your Corona.  I thought the service was excellent, as 99% of Korean restaurants generally have better service than American ones.  Overall it's pretty good (for Korea) but the prices don't justify going there often.

This.

I had Taco Bell last week and actually thought it tasted okay.

The Taco bell in Itaewon is surprisingly better than the taco bell that I've had in the States.

On the Border was possibly the worst dining experience I've had in Korea yet. And I've eaten dogmeat and  silkworm larvae. Really, tasted like the  burritos at my school lunch cafeteria and cost roughly 25 dollars a person.  Go to the smaller place in Hongdae... affordable and pretty good food. Across the street from the Apple Store? i forget. But really... On The Border.... border of what? A prison mess hall? I get shivers just thinking about it. May require PTSD counseling.

Rhetorical question but good looking out for our UK and Aussie cousins.

Hahaha, no, I know. I meant the italics to carry sort of a foreboding tone.

'Prison mess hall?' 'No, worse.... Mexico'

I like the place, it's a little pricey but it has more variety and offers all the standard tex-mex fare. Some of the smaller places are good too, but others stack up the rice. Tacobell is taco bell and the non-chain restaurants are as diverse as the contents of a 7 layer burrito. I suppose eating 'Mexican' food here is like eating 'Korean' food in Mexico. And my grandma's cooking would own that Mexican lady's cooking any day of the week.

On the Border is unreasonably priced, but does offer some rarer items.

As mentioned there's always Taco Bell which has pretty easy to find locations in Hongdae and Itaewon. If anyone find themselves around Jongno, there's also Tomatillo which reminds me of Chipotle back in the States. The service is a bit slow, but the food is decent enough. They usually have daily meal specials and cheaper beers.

There's also a vendor around Dongdaemun, which is cheaper but may be a bit inconvenient in the winter since their main seating section is outdoors. I forgot the name but I recall that it had Chili in it.

Cool -- can you name some and provide location information? I don't spend that much time in Hongdae, but I do like me a good mojito now and again.

There is also a Tomatillo right out of Yeoksam Station and in Itaewon.  A new place I tried in Itaewon is Vatos.  They have really good carne asada kimchi fries (i thought it sounded weird, but they were really good).  They also have lime for their drinks there.  They have bloody marys there too.  Not sure if that's hard to find in korea or not, personally I think they are gross (a friend was delighted to see it on the menu).

First time you go there, yeah its a bit expensive but lunch is reasonably priced and I'm sorry none of these other places have unlimited chips and salsa and for me that is what makes a Mexican restaurant. These other places are just fast food places basically. Also after the first time you go, you should get a discount card which makes it cheaper, the next time you go you get 10% off then it increases each time by 5% until you reach 30% when you go and use the the 30% they then give you a new card and a coupon for a free brownie desert (about 7,000 won on the menu) for the next time you go.
