Epik In-Service Training
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:08:45 pm »
Dear Epik teachers,
Is this required?

Thank you!

I did it just in case.  But really you can get away with just having them play in the background and chip away at it slowly.

Do yourself a favour and write down the questions and answers somewhere as they are all on the final test.

It is mandatory for new EPIK teachers. Unfortunately.

It's very true that you can just play it in the background and then do the final test.

Yes, and be sure to take the final test at the end... I didn't see this and almost forgot to do it.

I'm was wondering, what happens if you don't do this?
Can they fire you?

It's probably like some sort of contract breach.  In most contracts it says something along the lines of: You must do the required training and any "busy work" your school asks of you.  (Not exact quote)

It may only be a 3 strike deal against your contract or it may be one of those deadly 1 strike rules that get you fired.

I would say this.... it was asked of you to do this training for the job.  It is also asked of you to go to work and teach everyday.  Would you not show up to work for a few days because you didn't feel like it?  (Not using sick days or vacation)

It's not like they are asking something insane of you to do... it's training.  You go and you do it.  I would think any any other country if a boss asked you to do something for the job you do it or get fired.  (good excuse not withstanding)

They're quite repetitive but unfortunately it seems they're mandatory.

The Powerpoint guy from my orientation (possibly Daejeon?) made an appearance but I couldn't be bothered to watch six separate 30 minute model classes. I don't really need a demonstration of the lecture I just watched, nor did I need a "more and more" section to build upon it.

Good luck with finishing it while saying awake.

They're repetitive and a lot of the speakers are quite verbose. It feels as though the content was prepared more for people who have never been in a Korean classroom (and would be far more useful for them...) than for "in-service" training. The useful content and stories are largely muddied up by the rest of it.

For what it's worth, the final test at the end is largely common sense.

Hah!! I've been here nearly six months and I'm just NOW being informed of an EPIK training session in March. I came here thinking I'd be trained right away, but this is the first time any kind of training has been offered to me. I think that's a bit crazy/unnecessary. Anyone else have this experience?

It could be worse. I had been here 2.5 years before getting my first training!

My first 3 years I worked at an EPIk after school language center and had no training nor much guidance.
The course isn't that bad.
