"My dog was banned when the guards changed at my apartment - dogs are seen as unclean in certain Islamic cultures. I just told the guard it wasn't a dog - that it looked like a dog but it wasn't - they were too confused to do anything."

there was a fantastic article in the Economist last year about being an expat.. the yearning to be an expat the pluses/minuses, etc.

cultural clashes and surprises shouldn't be big surprises, one should read up on the place where they're thinking of moving to.

I could've easily foretold the difficulties that the Italian would face in Sweden for e.g. even though to a lazy observer, it would seem like a no big deal Europe to Europe move.

yet.. Latin Europe can be radically different from Germanic/Northern Europe.
