Canadian Confesses to Murder of Korean Woman

A Canadian has turned himself in to Korean police and confessed to murdering his Korean girlfriend three years ago. Police quoted the 38-year-old identified only by the initial S. as saying he decided to turn himself in because he was riven by remorse.

The man walked into Yongsan Police Station on Monday and confessed to the murder of the university student, who was 21 at the time. He said he returned to Korea to apologize to the bereaved family and to face the consequences, according to police.

The woman was drowned near Dongjak Bridge on March 23, 2009. Police questioned the Canadian at the time, but he told them her death was an accident. He said she went into the water to retrieve a tennis ball and then drifted into deeper water. He said he pulled her out and tried to resuscitate her but she died.

Since an autopsy discovered no signs of foul play, the case was logged on May 21, 2009 as an accidental drowning.

The Canadian came to Korea in 2001 and taught English, but returned to his home country after the incident. He then taught English in China. He told police he sought solace in religion but continued to be haunted by voices and the memory of his girlfriend as she died.

He returned to Korea on Saturday and met an American pastor he knew and confessed his crime. He also met his late girlfriend's mother and told her as well.

The man now says he held the young woman tight and jumped into the Han River and drowned her by pushing her head under water when she tried to get out. He added that he committed the murder because she refused to marry him and he began to suffer from delusions that she would hire somebody to kill him.

Police said he will be charged.

Yes, he did the right thing, but of course it won't bring her back. The whole episode is so sad. I can't imagine the thoughts that must go through someone's head that when they are turned down for marriage that they want to kill the loved one... just doesn't make sense.

This is a great tragedy.

Ack! Why don't people excerpt articles that they post? It's just good manners and common sense. What if the web site is blocked? What if the web site takes the article down? What if it's the Korea Times (don't get me started)?

LOL Done.
I don't read the times nor the herald.  8)

I'm sure many of us were here in 09 so I am certain somebody would know this guy.

This is really sad.  Nothing he does will ever change the life he took.  Glad he is going to jail but still.

It kinda makes you wonder how many people don't have a crisis of conscience after something like this happens.

It's very interesting how much attention is being paid to the remorse aspect of the confession. I wonder if there's a Canadian version of the article... and if they swap the word remorse for guilt.
