Expats, locals gather for anti-prostitution flash mob
« on: January 21, 2012, 07:35:28 pm »
To anyone who has helped organize, promote, or participate in this, I would like to say "thank you". It is so inspiring to hear about foreigners doing positive things. This is some of the best news I have read in a long time!

Quote
In the past, it was just Singletary and a few friends who would collect cards on various occasions. It wasn't until someone approached her with the idea of the flash mob that she even considered rallying a large group of foreigners together.

"I thought it was a great idea, so I met with some friends and we made it happen," Singletary said.

What they discovered was that a bigger group boosted the morale of the volunteers.

In fact, just a few weeks prior, a small group of foreigners went to the same area to do a smaller-scale version of the event. With just a few individuals, however, they found the atmosphere to be much different.

"It was much more intimidating," Chung explained. "We'd pick up all the cards and fliers, but just moments later, guys would come out and drop off more cards right where we just cleaned up... This time around was much more different."

Reactions of passers-by were also positive, according to Singletary. "A lot of people were very encouraged from the mob and, at one point, some Koreans expressed that they wanted to be out here helping us, but they couldn't because people would get the wrong idea and think they are picking up the cards to use the services," she said.

After spending more than an hour and a half picking up the cards and ads from the ground, the group made their way to the headquarters of the National Police Agency to drop off the bags that contained all of the collected fliers.

Spread the word about this, fellow waygook.org members. I hope to see you at the next gathering!

these people should be doing something constructive with their time. Room salon girls, etc need advertising to buy their newest luxury accessories, like a LV handbag  (which are hysterically overpriced in Korea) and these puritan do gooders are interfering with their right to work.

or are you trying to tell me this is simply about "keeping the streets clean of cards/garbage, etc"??

(if you apply it to ALL cards/advertising being tossed around from driving cars, etc then I wholeheartedly support it)

Oh man we can't do anything right.

Ignore them, they are a bunch of racist idiots of no consequence in Korea

By the way I joined that forum to express my concern at their racist postings and pointed out it was against there terms of posting. Guess what? They permanently banned me ... :P :P :P  What a joke they are.

I'm actually quite interested in why these foreigners think it's their right to stick their noses into matters that don't concern them.
The country's laws and its enforcement of them (or non enforcement, or laxity, etc) has nothing to do with them.  We are guests here, nothing more. Guests can shut up and stay. or leave.

they should shut up, or if they don't like it.. leave.

or, if they feel strongly enough about the matter, they can become Korean CITIZENS and then work on changing the system/structure from the inside.

basically yes. you/we have no rights here and nobody gives a rat's behind what WE think of their laws and their enforcement or non enforcement of them. That's the citizenry's domain.

yes, you're right I suppose.
They should volunteer to join the adjumma brigades and run around with their little metal clamps and pick up rubbish of ALL KINDS all over the place.

because it's obviously motivated by Americanism of the Puritan variety.
if it weren't prostitution related, I'd bet you 5 figures, this "flash mob" wouldn't have been formed.

if it's really about cleanliness, then like I said.. join the adjummas and walk around with the metal clamps and pick stuff up.

they should go back to Lynchburg, VA and put on their "chastity rings". That might impress people THERE.

Who is that dude who said "guests can shut up or leave"? What the hell is his problem? We're not guests on this earth, we live here. I don't know about you but I call myself a "human animal" not any other nationalistic label -- and what affects one human affects us all. These people are reacting against a form of oppression and as humans they have the right to, no matter which latitude/longitude they're currently located in.

Damn, I dont know why that guy got so pissed -- it's not as if someone said pizza originated in Italy, not Korea.

that would be me.

you're a guest in Korea. If you don't like its laws or its manner of enforcement of its laws, leave. or stay and shut up and mind your own business.

OR... become a citizen.. and then voice your opinions in the manner the voting citizenry does.

what "oppression" are you talking about btw?  I'd dare say most people would completely disagree with this definition of what I think you're defining. It's also been written about many times in the Korean press that most gals here "work" of their own free will.

take a little test. Throw out the countries around the world that are religiously loony (but do include the US), then look up where prostitution is legal and or widely tolerated and among  countries on this Earth you will find only ONE where it is not legal and and not widely tolerated and the would be the home of the uptight, the Puritan and the  "Scarlet Letter".

so, like I said.. take your protest against "oppression" back to Lynchburg, VA and keep its streets "clean", literally and figuratively.

Wow, you are one bitter person, lighten up, it is a good thing they did, one would swear they were going around beating up people the way you are carrying on. Sheez, take a chill pill.

PS. I am an employee not a guest, I pay taxes and therefore I am entitled to an opinion on what happens here.

it strikes me as more than a little condescending, that "good thing they did".

do you think they'd dare organize their little flash mob against TRUE oppression in a place like Saudi Arabia?
or stick to the same theme and try it in say Amsterdam.. or Brazil? or Russia?

of course they wouldn't. they'd get their asses kicked and that handclap you'd  be hearing from a distance would be mine.

btw.. I don't like the fact I have to deal with motorcycles on the sidewalks in Korea. I suspect this also isn't strictly legal.
if I organized a flash mob to deal with this nuisance, my Korean neighbors, waiting for their kimchi jiggae deliveries would come out and beat my ass.
(it would take a lot of them, but they'd get it done).

and they'd also be right.

Yegob, it is pointless trying to have a discussion with you. You seem to be blinded by hatred towards foreigners, I mistakenly thought you are one, seems I was wrong.

BTW, what harm is there in showing 'mild' protest towards something that is universally deemed abuse? Ah, perhaps you make use of their services, hence your snotty comments against those who stood up for what is right. You also seem to have a problem with people that have religious beliefs, that is your right, but keep it off a forum like this.

I think, realistically, if you did a survey, that not all involved were 'religious'. Good morals are not the exclusive right of 'religious' people. Get off you high horse, shake your head and smell the daisies.

Funny the things that rile people up.
I think the most annoying thing said on this forum is:

"If you don't like XYZ about Korea, then leave!"

Rubbish
We teach EFL not ESL. Hagwon and "Private School" are not synonymous. Not everyone works in either a hagwon or public school. Immigration Question? Call 1345.

I am a foreigner. I also know my place. I do hate foreigners who want to impose their mores on other cultures/countries. Religious missionaries are a particular pet peeve.

universally deemed abuse?  Where? by whom?

once again, open you eyes and look again at a map of the world and figure out where the world's oldest profession is legal and or widely tolerated. Know why? cuz it's the world's oldest profession.

it all started when the world's first cavewoman quickly figured out that the burly saber tooth tiger hunter had a lot of meat and was giving her "the eye".  She wanted some of his meat (the saber tooth variety, that is). He wanted something else. A bargain was quickly struck (or perhaps with some long back and forth negotiations)

and the rest is history.

to think some idiot flash mob will even pause much less stop  thousands years of history intertwined with human nature is laughable.
but let them try some more.

If I were a Korean card distributor, I'd be chucking the cards at their stupid little heads from the window on my car.  On purpose.

btw. if this is considered a "political activity", I hope they all get deported.

not rubbish at all.

You're a guest here and you're in no position to change XYZ about Korea if a predominant number of locals likes XYZ (e.g. motorcycles on sidewalks)

accept it, deal with it, or ignore it. or if you can't do any of the previous, you have only one option. Leave.
