Yup, I've had similar encounters where my spidey sense started tingling.  I've learned to just lie lie lie and remove myself from the situation.  One time a young lady struck up a seemingly innocent conversation with me on the subway and once I mentioned I worked in a public school she told me she was a part of SMOE and demanded all this personal info.  I just walked away and she started yelling at me so I got off the train.  I get this a lot in my new neighbourhood as well.  I don't mind making small talk with the kimbap ladies or 7/11 guys, but I've learned to be evasive and guarded when approached on the street or on the subway now.  Actually, a few weeks ago I had a somewhat similar encounter as the OP.  Lots of weird questions and when I got off the train at my stop he tried to stop me.  There really are anti-foreigner types out there looking to start trouble.  Don't be paranoid, just vigilant.

No, I think you acted fine.  He didn't get what we was looking for.  He could be with the anti-English spectrum guys, presumably there is more than one.

I love their choice of 'spectrum', how ironic is that!

And, in that article, the sentence "x, who is single and has no children", made me laugh out loud, literally.  That's the reporter trying to tell the reader, "this bloke smells of weird."

As someone in another post about privates mentioned if you turn someone in you do get a piece of the fine money... Maybe he's just trolling for that.

There are people who make a living soley from informing like this.

Wow, crazy story.  A couple comments:

Take it back to Dave's… nobody wants to hear this BS.

The majority of the honest and professional NETs out there have been tainted by the few bad apples that have been caught doing drugs or other crimes and then showing up in class.

There is absolutely no documentary evidence that any foreigner in Korea has ever taught a class under the influence of illegal narcotics. Please stop repeating this canard.

On an unrelated note, I was waiting for my train and had this conversation with an English vampire today-- a complete stranger, mind you.

Vampire: Hey, nice to meet you...
Me: Yeah.
Vampire: You are American?
Me: No.
Vampire: I've been drinking… do you like drinking?
Me: I don't really do it very often.
Vampire: So what do you like about Korea? Do you like the women? Little boys?
Me: WHAT THE F--K??!
Perhaps he read the recent news about the ESL teacher who molested an 11 year old Korean boy in a sauna.

Sources, or else it's hearsay.  I find this one hard to believe.

I can't find the news article about it. A thread with a link to the news article about it was recently posted on Dave's. The thread got deleted but part of it still appears in a google search:

"5 posts - 5 authors - yesterday
The Esl teacher saw a boy (11) smiling in a bathhouse. So he went over and put his weiner in/on the boy's face. When caught, he claimed that ..."

Can you copy/paste the article?  I'm not a member of Dave's but I am interested in reading it.  I've googled "ESL teacher child molestation Korea" but only have come up with blogs briefly speaking about it.  One case in Daegu involving a teacher (no nationality listed) in his 50s and 2 6th grade boys (2010) and another case in Seoul with a Canadian teacher in his 40s and 3 1st grade girls (2009).  Both are horrible, but don't mention them being accused/spending time in jail/paying financial retribution for the offenses.

Something like this would be all over the newspapers, but I haven't found one case to be published in any of them.  If it's speculation, then I only see it being written to sensationalize and sully the reputation of foreign English teachers in Korea.  Any schmuck can write his opinion in a blog, but reputable newspapers would (or I ought to say 'should') report the facts.

If you can't find the news article, that might be because it doesn't exist in English or doesn't exist yet.  Even though I pity the fool who is accused of molestation, it's jus' a whole lotta unverified jibbajabba.  Be really careful of what you post because Koreans are ultra-savvy with the cyber world and something like this could flood the nation with torrents of foreigner-bashing drool and not many Koreans can tread water...

Today I too searched for names of any ESL teacher in Korea who had been convicted of a sexual crime against a minor. I couldn't find any. That doesn't mean that there aren't any, but if anyone can provide any names or other information, I would like to know about it. I'm looking for convictions, not charges.

This article from 2010 shows that, in 2008, the general sex-crime rate for all foreigners in Korea was 20.8 per 100,000. The sex-crime rate for Korean citizens in Korea was 108 per 100,000, which is more than five times greater than that of foreigners (if you presume that minors and the elderly don't commit such crimes and adjust the stats accordingly, you find that the difference between the rates increases):

Oh well in that case it's perfectly okay.
My bad.
 ???

EDIT: Not really… and I for one vote that this thread DOESN'T turn into an ESL teacher pedophile thread-- it's about creepy stalkers, which is more of a concern to everyone here because they're far more plentiful than pedophile NETs.
We don't need it to turn into a 'NETs are bad too' thing where NETs have to go on the defensive all the time as is often the case on Dave's.

I think this is it-
http://kr.news.yahoo.com/service/news/shellview.htm?linkid=33&articleid=2012012715074137247&newssetid=470

The title says 미국인 영어강사, 목욕탕서 소년에게 '몹쓸짓'

With the help of endic.naver.com I translate it as "An American English teacher did an evil deed to a boy at a bath house."
