Anyone else at school today?
« on: January 25, 2012, 12:39:52 pm »
I'm the only one at school today besides the VP and admin staff.  :'( I looked at the school schedule and it's grayed out like the other holidays, but my attendance record says today is a workday.  It wouldn't be the first time I wasn't told anything but I got only 3 more hours to tough it out.  Anyone else at school today?

I'm putting in a few hours of "face time" today. Since I live right beside the school it doesn't really hurt if I don't have anything better to do.

Thanks, I feel better. I'd feel even better if the aircon actually heated up the office. I'm in full winter gear with gloves, scarf, hat and boots with a blanket and sitting on a heating pad and it's still cold!

Dude...if heater seems not to be working or feels like A/C....hit ...온도 선택 button and then press until indicator reads 난방. If it says 냉반 you'll get A/C regardless of what number you push it up to.... Sorry if you already know this.

Hey bb thanks. The aircon is pumping out heat but it's really just underpowered for the size of the office. It's a corner office as well so quite exposed to the elements.

I was going to start a thread asking a question about desk warming, but here seems as good a place as any to ask it. Has anyone ever been woken up at 8.45am by their co-teacher frantically asking where they are because they are supposed to be desk warming (doesn't apply if you're supposed to be teaching)? Or had pay deducted for not showing up for desk warming duty?

No and no. And in the very unlikely event one of those things happened my VP would be getting some serious questions about whether he wanted me to renew.

I'm here at school and I had camp. There are a few other people around and I think most company workers are also back in their offices. It's hard not to be jealous of the people still on break though!

Oh, and my answer to both questions is no. I regularly come in at 8:45 during camp days and I plan to wander in even later whenever my deskwarming days come around. My co-teacher comes in for a few hours a couple of times a week, but there's an "administrative assistant" AKA my babysitter that comes in from 9-1 just to make sure classes are really happening and to help if there's something wrong... Why? Has it happened to you?

 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( This morning the teachers in my office asked if I came to school yesterday and I said, "Yes." I guess they noticed someone brought cookies over the long weekend. After lunch a co-teacher apologized to me for not reminding me Wednesday was a school holiday. It wasn't her fault anyways since she's not my supervisor. Besides, my attendance sheet that I sign every morning didn't indicate Wednesday was a holiday, just Monday and Tuesday. I guess I won't feel too guilty about taking a sick day.

I'm reporting for DW duty for the rest of this week and the next as well. Despite my desk being directly below the heater, I'm still FREEZING!

My school gave me an attendance form to sign each day, but I haven't run into any other people these past few days. Oh, I spoke too soon. Another teacher just popped in and left. Guess they were looking for someone else.  :blank:

Just polishing some lessons, reading up on articles, and studying Korean. The honor system thing is great, and my CT even gave me the go-ahead to leave whenever I "need."  ;)

I'm doing camp. Three hours of that followed by four and half hours of whatever.

Yes.  I'm here for make -up afterschool classes today and tomorrow.  Then camp for 3/4th graders next week.  However, a few other teachers are here and we've had nice chats.  Also, the heater is working, and the principal & vice principal shared a delivery lunch with me and some other teachers. :)

I am here doing "phone English" Which is just because I was given my holidays in the summer and now I have to "do something" at school to make-up the time. It is not bad, but I did take a long lunch break.

I am expected to come in all 8 hours. At previous schools I took the vacation schedule with a grain of salt and blew off most days, but my co-teacher called me in a huff yesterday asking where I was, what I was doing, etc. After yelling for awhile she reminded me that I have to be there all day, every day of vacation, even though nobody else is here....

My decision to not renew was made much easier....

I already did my c amp the week between Christmas and New Year but my school has now helpfully given me "intensive speaking and writing classes". With the VP here I can't leave even once this is done, though I wonder if that's the whole "not bothering the older more senior blah blah blah". Annoying.

Oh ! It's not just me!!
No one is here today!
And is it me, or did the grounds keeper (who lives here) give me a werid look - like "what are you doing here?" look. I swear he looked shocked to see me.

What bum bags! They should tell me!! I have to get up early and commute one hour to bloody be here. I feel forgotten, like my time and rest isn't important.

You get paid to sit and watch tv all day.  What other job can you do that at?  It's pointless and boring but just buy a portal hard drive and put some movies on it.  Heck,  I might bring my Xbox in and play a new game.  I love my job.

Fair enough, but we are teachers. I think a lot of people who've never taught before can't get around the idea that teachers get paid a salary to do a job and that job isn't like punching a clock at Starbucks. It's a job that entails things like meeting students after dinner to help with university interviews when such a thing is necessary, and not coming into school to do nothing when it's unnecessary. To be sure I come in for a few hours to put in some "face time" and do some advanced planning when I have nothing better to do, like today, but treating teachers like clock-punchers is ridiculous and even counter-productive. That my school doesn't do this is one of the reason why I like it and don't mind putting in extra time and effort when there's a good reason to do so.

Being asked to deskwarm in an empty school is just insulting.
It's being treated like a child, only worse.
People trying to make it sound great are kidding themselves.
I have a job that just gives us vacation.
You know, like a real, professional teaching job.
We teach EFL not ESL. Hagwon and "Private School" are not synonymous. Not everyone works in either a hagwon or public school. Immigration Question? Call 1345.

And you are here wasting time on Waygook?  Seems like your life must be pretty dull and pointless Mr. PhD.  Watching you troll on a few other posts, so think I may troll you for a while to pass my day here at school.
