Kim Yu-na appears in US textbook

By Cho Mu-hyun

Korean figure skating star Kim Yu-na’s picture has appeared in an American mathematics textbook.

According to business daily Asia Economy, the 21-year-old’s picture appears in a textbook called “Algebra and Trigonometry: A Graphic Approach.” The picture is known be in a chapter explaining why it is important to study trigonometry, and has been uploaded recently.

The chapter explains how trigonometry is closely related to our lives, giving a picture of Kim performing a spin move as an example. However, the book does not indentify who she is.

Her agency All That Sports is known to have received no prior notice of the picture before it was printed and spread to online communities, saying that in principle they should have been notified but plan no legal action against the publisher.

Netizens who saw the picture gave various reactions, such as “I am proud that Kim Yu-na is in an American textbook,” “They are guessing how many spins she did with mathematics,” and “No better way to know that you are popular than being in a textbook.”

One of those who commented on the picture is known to have asserted that this is not her first appearance in a textbook, saying Kim appeared in a French language book used in Japan as a representative figure of Korea.

According to a netizen called “bluesol” from the DC Inside online community, the previous version of the textbook had Chinese-American figure skater Michelle Kwan.

This is actually a pretty well written story considering what the Korean Times regularly puts out. They used to straight-up copy articles from THE WEEKLY WORLD NEWS (a U.S. tabloid magazine), so this story is actually an improvement.

Oh, Korea Times!- You've improved! (sarcastic clap).

If they really looked into it, they would also discover that Kim Yuna is the best figure skater who ever lived, figure skating is also the greatest sport in the history of mankind, and therefore Korea is the greatest nation ever.

I wish someone would start a blog dedicated to following the Korea Times' hilarious articles. It's too funny! I would do it myself, but I have a hard enough time emailing my family regularly.

Hey, it was news in the west when Nicolas Cage made it onto a Serbian Biology textbook.

I guess a lot of you have seen it already, but here is a link:

That's an astonishing picture of Cage and I'm suffering severe moustache envy.

There is an obvious difference in that the picture of Kim Yun Na is used as an example in trigonometry and that's why it appears in the textbook whereas the picture of Nicolas Cage and his glorious moustache is from a film and is wholly unrelated to the textbook itself. They obviously just chose the picture of Cage because of his strong "Serbian" moustache. That makes it more newsworthy and much funnier.

It makes me wish I were a Serbian fly on the wall at that design meeting: "This man, he has a strong moustache, a beautiful wife and cute baby. Plus, look at that moustache and the way he is clasping his belt buckle - very Serbian. We should really put him on the front." "OK but we still keep the red roses?" "Yes, Goran, we keep the flowers."
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

We are not "guests" in Korea. Korea didn't invite us over for Pimms in the garden. We are paid employees.
