Busan Haps- The Fight against Dog Meat
« on: February 05, 2012, 02:53:20 pm »
The Busan Haps has a great news article on the issue of Dog eating in Korea. It covers both sides and has some surprising facts of dog meat (nutritional value, health value, etc).

I"m not against people eating dog, I'm against the way it's killed.  That being said other animals aren't killed very humanly either. :(

Killing people and killing animals are both pretty similar and it's based more on emotions than science.

There's an old redneck belief that bullets are cheaper than rope and faster than injections. The same applies to critters--the most humane are sometimes the messiest.

When it comes to critters, though, I find the way that they're raised to be much worse than how they're killed.

You can flog the things to death for all I care, but a cage is no place for an animal, especially for a pack animal like a dog. They're social by nature, like we are. It just isn't right, no matter the species.

The reasons for eating dog always seemed kind of weird to me. Why does beating a dog to death help with men's "stamina" on hot days?

Turns out, in the article, it doesn't. It makes problems worse.  :o

I read most of the article and I really can't seem to comprehend why people care so much.  I ate dog before because I was curious about how it tasted, and yes for the novelty of it.  People back in the U.S. used to get so pissed at me when they heard I tried it.

The same would happen when I told people that I fed live mice and rats to my boas and pythons.

I would then ask them if they liked beef or chicken and follow up with asking if they were pissed about cows and chickens being raised and slaughtered for food.  They then might say that it's different but couldn't convince me how it was.

Let's be honest here, I think the majority of people are just biased because dogs and mice are cute.  They are also common as pets.  Some say it's because dogs are smart.  Who cares?  Pigs are arguably smart too.  They just happen to be more delicious and less cute although sometimes are kept as pets as well.

I'm with madison79 and will agree that keeping them in small cages or killing them slowly does suck.  I also think eating endangered stuff is probably not in our best interest.  But in the end, cow, chicken, dog, buffalo, deer, snake, grasshopper, ostrich is all the same in my book.

Yep, agreeing with the guy above me. I saw a great documentary from KBS about how they were selling pets as dog meat. Koreans were so upset that they were eating "Pet" meat, but didn't mind "yellow dog" meat. Anyway, if people are going to complain about dogs, let's take a look at all animals and our consumption and exploitation of them. Check out the movie, Earthlings.

Hmm... really well written article. I know the author!

With that said, I agree with cowboy7. In regards to how the dogs live, I'm kind of on the fence... living on a free range farm to be raised for meat seems somewhat like a waste of resources. Unless the happiness and quality of life directly affects the quality of meat, I doubt any farmers will care about the "social animal" aspect of being a dog.

It does make some people feel better about the choice to eat meat, though. So there's always that.

This.

I know how the dogs are raised is not cool, but look at how other animals are raised (like chickens in the US).  Also, I think beating the dogs to death is just ridiculous.  Petnapping is not cool (that belongs to someone).

However, I see no issue with eating a dog raised as meat that was treated half-decently and slaughtered in a relatively humane manner.

The reason I don't eat dog is because it tastes absolutely foul.

I heard that eating dog meat here is illegal but the police just turn a blind eye to it. Can anyone confirm this?

Nothing illegal about eating it. Selling it is because it's unregulated.

chickens in the states are bred and killed in a horrific way too.

anyway
I eat boshintang. never in my wildest dream would i have thought that I would actually enjoy it.
All the koreans i meet are fascinated by this fact lol

yes, ugly killing i oppose it. but opposing dog meat just for the fact that it is 'man's best friend' (by the way, man's best friend here in korea is a cow) is illogical.

why do you need a source for that?

Koreans never had pets like the west.
In fact, most of the times people were in dire need of food and the means of farming.. which the korean cows provided.
Its a generally known fact.

I enjoy the local dog restaurant. It is a bit spicy but overall its quite good.

Though, at 11k won, I'd prefer a serving of dwaeji galbi.

I agree with this guy.

I don't feel good about eating other animals. Unfortunately, I can't break my meat addiction yet. Ideally I'd like to try to eat the animals that have a smaller/less-intense range of emotions.

My college major was in Exercise Science so I'm aware of how healthy the food is overall.  My comment was more about how every food item was good for something.  As my KT said "isn't all food good for something?"  Yup.
In Wisconsin we have Friday Fish Fries and even that isn't too bad due to the Omega 3's in the fish.

would you eat your kids?! or your friend's kids? or a stranger's kids?
that's how dogs should be seen.
i see all of my dogs as my children.
all of you who have eaten dog meat are MONSTERS!
let alone you are eating dogs but you are well aware of the method used to kill them!
MONSTERS!
only primitive cave people would resort to eating their best friend!
