How much do you spend on a night out?
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:23:47 am »
So the weekends done and you wake up looking at your wallet only to realise how much you spent the night before...

How much do you spend on a weekend night? Feel good or bad about this? Just curious...

Rarely more than about 30,000 won for two of us.  A night out for me consists of going out with my girlfriend to the hof, eating some chicken and drinking some beer/soju cocktails.
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

Depends. I've been able to stay around my neighborhood and get by slowly on a few beers and snacks and manage under 20,000 with some friends. Other times I'd go to Seoul and easily spend 50,000+ mostly from drinks and cover charges.  I don't really regret anything and I never feel pressured to go beyond my limits. With that note, limiting yourself to just the money you have on you in cash is one way to budget. Just be aware that people tend regret the things they don't do more than the things they do.  ;)

I know others who are misers when it comes to spending, even preferring to always make their own meals than eat out. To each their own, but the night life here isn't as expensive as my hometown and it's very therapeutic every now and then. I personally recommend going out every now and then, even for the non-party types. I've actually been finding more mellow gatherings from art premieres, cocktail parties, and jazz concerts.

I try to only go out once a week (occasionally twice...). Typically no more than 70,000 for a long night of dinner and drinking (cocktails. I like gin.) until sunrise (including transportation). I feel fine about it. I have a good time, and I get to see all  my friends since I'm effectively a hermit on a weekday.

Now, I'm from LA so back home I would have spent $70 just on the cabs if we couldn't find a DD....

50k night out with friends in Seoul (drinks / shots / taxi home)

More if I bring home a K-girl.

I always feel good the day after.  All I expect is a good time, anything else is just gravy.

I remember when I could have a blast at someone's kegger and bring home a guest for $5.  This thread made me miss college.

I spend a lot  :-X Sometimes I feel good about it, sometimes I decide to stay in the next weekend, haha. I love partying in Korea but I find that my nights/partying lasts so long, that's why I spend the money. This weekend I spent about 100,000 on drinks and food. But, I have fun, and don't really care. Cheers!

I'm not much of a drinker, but here's what a weekend night out with friends would look like (give or take 1,000 or 2,000won from each item):

dinner ~10,000
coffee/dessert ~ 5,000
drink ~5,000
noraebang/multibang ~ 10,000
hookah/another drink ~ 10,000
2nd dinner/early breakfast ~5,000
Total = 45,000W

This happens once a week.  I'm not a drinker, but a drink or two once a week is nice :)  I also bike everywhere, so that has shaved off some late night taxi ride costs.

Eat a Korean meal instead of a Western one, a crazy amount of galbi or samgyeopsal will cost a fraction of steak or pizza.

If your intention is to get drunk then learn to embrace soju into your life.

Why spend a fortune on a club when you can smuggle some family mart bought beers into a noraebang and create your on wicked sounds?

I've realized I spend the amount of money I have with me. For instance, if I have 35,000 won in my wallet I will spend 35,000won. However, last week I had 50,000won and by the end of the weekend it was all gone! That's why I try and limit myself to going out just once a weekend, and not eating out/drinking out too often during the week. Personally, I hate spending money, so I don't feel too great about it, but I know it's worth it to have a good time with my friends.  ;D

Look up cheap places to eat in your town that isn't another KIM PASA.  Take your time eating, drinking, and socializing while at one establishment.  I've noticed that when you take it slow, you don't need another drink so fast.  Plus, you'll realize you're full and you won't need more food.  The socializing will help prolong your time at one place.

There might be a really cheap noraebang in your area.  You should ask or look around.  Noraebangs make the night last longer and I love the cheap one in my city.

Limit yourself to one late night socializing a week.

If you like to drink or like to get a buzz, get a drink at Family Mart.  I get a Heineken from Family Mart for W4,000 instead of W6,000 at the bar.  They even open it for me, too.

Keep the amount of money you plan to spend that night in your wallet.  Maybe that will help you think twice when you want another drink and you realize you only have enough for a cab ride home. (Someone mentioned this tip before, too).

Also, don't buy other people drinks too often.  It's a nice gesture.  I've done it before, but no one has treated me the same way, so I've stopped offering.

Split cab ride homes with other people if you spend time with other people in your neighborhood.

Another thing, don't stay out too late.  The longer you stay out, the more you spend.

Umm yeah, I'm with you. Anything less than 150K and I'm feeling pretty good. I buy my girl her drinks as well but it's not like she's a heavy hitter.

To be honest I'm not really worried. I'm not puking or fighting, I just like good beer and good food. I still save ok, it just means I have to work a little harder during the week.

...This is amazing...
How are you seriously only spending 50k???? That boggles my mind.

On a regular night, around 70k. If I'm going a little crazier, upwards of 100k.

I'm wondering, how early (late) are you going in? I often won't crawl back into bed until 3 or 4 in the morning. And by that time, I'll have been at about four or five different places.

But, I'm not concerned about the money I spend. If I'm out, I'm out; no sense in pussyfooting around. If it's a matter of saving money, just do what I do. First thing after pay day, put the money you're going to save away. Take it out of your account. Put it into another account. Take that card or bank book and keep it hidden at home. Then go buckwild with the money you've left. That's your money. Do what you want. Seriously, easiest way to save money. You don't save money by adding the coins you've left at the end of the month. You save money by SAVING money. Take half your paycheck and put it away from you. The other half is yours to eat, pay bills, have fun.

Spend too much one month? Have no money? Sucks. Spend a week eating nothing but ramen or white rice and you'll fast learn how to not go crazy. When I first started working in Korea, I was blowing through 1.5 million inside of 2 weeks (bottle service, buying shots, having sushi [not rolls, I mean that the guy carves for you and your date at your table], nice clothes). Yes, it was stupid fun. But then, I'd wake up and realize, "Well, I suppose if I want to pay for my phone, internet, electricity, etc I'll have to eat white rice for a week before my next paycheck."
Didn't save a single cent that year.

But, now, I throw a grand into my savings first thing. I throw an additional 100-200 into another checking account as well. That still leaves me with plenty of money. It also helps that I don't go out nearly as often (I'm living in a much more rural area). But, when I do go out, I go balls to the wall. I eat, I drink, I treat myself and others.
Want to save money? Put it away.

150k? Jesus Christ that's worse than me when I first came to Korea.  Where do you go Gangnam?

- Stop eating western food, start eating Korean food like Kimbap Chonguk before you go out
- Kick back a kettle of soju before you go out.  That way you're not spending as much at the bar if you just go to get wasted.
- Don't buy other people drinks. I never buy girls drinks and it doesn't hurt your chances like most say it does.
- Don't go out every weekend.  Never understood how people do that shit. My liver can't handle two nights of getting wrecked and getting home at 5AM in row.

I do not endorse smuggling drinks that you bought at the GS25 into the clubs and bars here.  It makes us look cheap and low class, which is sad since we make good enough money here to not have to do that.  Plus in this xenophobic country, when you do something dumb like that, we all look dumb. Thanks.

To each his own.  I spend less than 50,000 because I stay in my neighborhood more or less (no cabs), eat Korean food (because foreign food in Korea is awful anyways), I drink beer/soju, go to noraebang (cheap when with others), and am in bed by 2 am.

I do not enjoy partying hard, trekking an hour into Seoul, clubs, loud music I can't control, mixed drinks, (bad) foreign food and the generally over-the-top drunkeness.  I'm very content to have a happy, fun, no-frills night with my friends/girlfriend.  Fortunately, my preferences are cheap.

C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

Western food should be a treat. Drink soju before you go out. Learn what a taxi to your neighborhood actually costs and enough Korean to tell the cabbie not to screw you.

"Please don't screw me! I have no way of actually ascertaining whether or not you're going the right way. But, if I tell you not to screw me, you're legally obligated to go to my point of destination using the shortest or fastest route!"
"Sure, you got it, bud."
xD xD xD

Jokes, jokes. Just keep an eye on your surroundings, know where you're supposed to be going, or have your smart phone out and have that GPS navigation doing it's thing!

By the by, "잘못 가는거잖아요?" JahlMot GaNeunGuh JahnAhYo? I think we're going the wrong way.
Say with confidence if you feel uncertain. It'll put your cabbie on his toes. A little peace of mind, I suppose.

Yea good call on knowing the fastest way to your place in Korean.  You can save man won easily not letting the scumbag cab drivers here take advantage of you.

General rule of thumb: usually if you're on the high way you're getting ripped off.
