Why are the resources so mixed up???
« on: November 29, 2010, 12:51:24 pm »
Why not have a section to download:

1/  Complete PPT games
2/  PPT Templates
3/  Lesson Plans
4/  Etc.
5/  Etc.

This board has a lot of good stuff, but  I waste a lot of time looking for it.

In spite of the question with three question marks from a person who hasn't uploaded anything we'll see what we can do.  The board is huge and keeping everything in line can be a challenge, but we'll take your---and anyone else's---suggestions and try and make the site as user-friendly as possible.

And, as always, anyone who would like to volunteer their time to help organize a section, please let us know.  There's always work to be done.

just for the record i never really have any trouble finding anything, I just use the grade index and usually within five minutes can find exactly what I am looking for. Not that my opinion matters just saying.

I'd recommend streamlining it a bit (teacher accommodations?), but I think it does make sense overall.  I posted templates in the wrong section - it should be in    'Multi-Level Concepts and Lessons'.  Apart from that, completed lessons have their own board.  Materials for specific Korean curricula are well organized.

Separating PPTs from lessons plans doesn't seem necessary; logically you'd post any resources associated with your lesson plan in one place.

Brian, kudos to you for being so...tactful in your response..Since I'm not a moderator, I don't really feel the need to be.

@raraohm.I'm a little annoyed by your remarks AND by your lack of them.

A member since July, yet, you've neither posted to say "thank you" or to show your appreciation in some way to the those who run/set up this site or to anyone whose material you've download.  Nor, as mentioned above, have you uploaded any of your own material to contribute to the community which, by the way, I think is an excellent way to show your appreciation for this site and to those countless others who have taken the time to share their materials with you.

So, now it might be clear why your first message in six months might come off as more slight than constructive criticism.  What do you think???

The thing is, while you may have offered some good suggestions, although I'm still unsure of the benefits of 4 & 5, good ideas are never an adequate replacement for poor tact.

Perhaps I'm being a bit sensitive but if you're just going to be a leecher (technical term) then I think you've forfeited your right to complain, though measured complaints and suggestions I'm sure are always welcome from anyone.

p.s. All of that time you "wasted" searching for materials could have been spent producing your own lesson plan..just a thought

I agree with cad123, the grade indexes (indices?) are a great help. Can't imagine what it must have been like without them! A huge thank you to whoever made them :) and I agree with Rufus, separating PPTs from lessons plans is not neccessary.
This site is SO useful! Thank you :)

Also one thing to remember about all of your moderators... we have jobs, too.  There is no need to separate anything.  However, as you may have seen in the reminders earlier today and last week, please search and see if there are other threads that cover the same topic as yours.  There's this fantastic option at the top called 'search' it's sometimes quite amazing so as not to 'waste your time.' I can't believe I am wasting my time right now to remind you to be conscious of your moderators' and contributers' efforts.

In terms of the lesson ideas, there's sections on elementary, middle school, high school and camps. I don't see how you could improve on that. Putting all of the powerpoint games in one category regardless of what grade they are for is a terrible idea. Anyone with functional hands and the ability to read shouldn't have that much trouble finding what they need.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful feedback to my simple little suggestion.  If you don't wanna change anything just say so.  I don't really care.  But as a first time user I was giving my first impression.  And sheila, thanks for the great advice about the search function.  Another great first impression about this site.  Actually second impression, the first was another snide remark from Brian.

Personally, with a thread such as this, wouldn't it make more sense if people just didn't reply?
Within 20 minutes the thread would disappear from the feed, never to be seen again.
Instead, it keeps popping up as if it were something important or useful.

Of course, this post counters that motion - but you get what I mean...

If you can't take it or don't like the layout of all of the fabulous resources available, I'm sure one of our moderators would gladly cancel your membership. Be careful what you're saying on here.
TBH, it seems you're jumping on a bit hard.  It wasn't a a particularly bad post in the first place, it was just advice and it did get a couple of decent replies.

Good grief.  I guess I got on rather late for this, but yes guys... Let's all play nice now.  This place isn't for flaming, and I would also suggest moderators understand that not everyone means to be rude, and to give time for people to rectify anything if they need to do so.

It's a shame raraohm left because of the misunderstanding.  He's more than welcome to join again, and I appreciate the suggestions on site organization, it's always good to get input, even if it seems a little demanding considering time restrictions.

I'm responsible for much of the site design, and features.  I also understand as a user what would be great to have on this site, but currently it's all running on a fairly limited "forum" script.

I'm working on something, and I hope to have things organized for deployment at a certain point, but it was put on the back burner for a bit because of other engagements.  I still don't have an exact date yet for upgrades (on the UI side), but that doesn't mean It's not being considered/planned/worked on.

That being said, play nice everyone.  Let those who want to give suggestions/criticism do so freely.

If you're reading this raraohm, please do feel free to join up again, and again I'm terribly sorry.

Thank you WebAdmin for your apology.  I would also like to apologise if I came across as being a flamer. (wait a minute, that doesn't sound right) Anyway, I wasn't trying to cause trouble with my original post.  I see now the triple question marks may have caused the whole thing.  If I offended anyone, especially the mods, again, my apologies.  I thought the forum for: "Questions, suggestions, corrections etc..." was for input for this website, which it wasn't.  I have enough stress right now worrying if a North Korean artillery shell is going to land on my doorstep.  I certainly don't need any from a site, I consider, to be truly helpful, altruistic and full of useful things.  I actually have some PPT files made to accompany YBM/SISA text books.  I'll upload them.  Also, I have designed many websites myself. (So I thought I would throw in my two cents worth)  Cheers.

Hey Raraohm, good to see you're back :)

Well, let's just say it was all a weird misunderstanding.  I don't really think the blame goes on anyone here, it happens, and it's good to get thing clarified.

The moderation role requires taking actions that are sometimes hit and miss.  It's not easy to determine what a person intends, hence the function of the emoticons in the original post (if it happens to be short and mostly imperative in tone), and patience by the moderator group.  I think everyone has done well so far on the team, including the users on waygook.  You won't believe some of the nonsense I've come across on other sites.  I like the fact that this place is much different.  We should all aim to keep it that way.

Lastly, please do feel free to post suggestions/comments/criticism.  I actually do welcome them, and if you don't feel comfortable posting them on a thread, you can always send me a private message or email.

p.s.  I wasn't intending to refer to anyone as a flamer  ;D It was just a remark about posts in general.  I think your post was fine, irrespective of the question marks!!!! :) :)

I think the site and the moderators are awesome. I worked in mental health for 15 years-got burned out and decided I'd try teaching overseas. After 3 months of teaching in the public school system of Korea , I was ready to bail to the ME or back to the States. I think this site saved my job and my sanity to a certain degree. I'm completing my contract and just signed my next year contract with a Korean university just an hr south of Seoul. Thanks everyone for this site and their contributions of advice, lesson plans, PPT,  games etc.

 Cheers !
