Learn Korean IPad app
« on: February 10, 2012, 11:49:19 am »
If you have an IPad, there's a really good free app. Helpful for when you first arrive in Korea. Things like directions, eating out, general conversation etc. There's a Korean voice for English words.

LearnKorean.

And what might I search for in the App store? What's the name of said app?

No worries! I hadn't logged into Waygook until today anyway. :) Thanks!
I downloaded Korean Writing (handwriting?). It's for little children, but helps you understand the ''proper'' way to write Hangul letters. This has helped me when I'm reading Koreans' handwriting. I understand how a box (m-sound) can become an underlined "n" and a squiggle is just fine for (r/l) [can't type in Korean on this cpu]. It's got cute words as well that I wouldn't have learned elsewhere. Anyway, worth the trial version if you're interested!

There are a lot of free flashcard-type apps for the iPhone. One I purchased and really enjoy is "Korean Handwriting Plus."  While I can read Hangul, I have problems reading students' or co-teachers' handwriting. This nifty little app helped me see how the KOREANS are taught to write the Hangul characters... ergo explaining why the "m" sound can look like a melted "q" or which scribble is a "j/ch" or a "l/r."  Nevertheless, it's a cute little app with pertinent vocabulary as well. Give the free version a go to see what the rudimentary basics are like for the app.

For the iPhone, you can just download some of the podcasts like KoreanClass101. But that's more speaking and listening. They do provide the phrases so that you can read them while you learn. But there's a ton of free podcasts out there.

I love Korean Class 101.  I've got their entire program and have been really happy with it.  I don't have time to enroll in a class so I think this is the next best thing.  It's really done wonders for my Korean.
