Wii in the Classroom

(1/1)

kennetic:
Hey everyone!

This winter I had great success using a Wii in the classroom and am looking into using it about once a month (or every X amount of weeks, maybe 5) for middle school boys. However, while I have a few games in mind that have great content to get the kids talking and thinking, there may be a few games out there that can help even more! I will also list the games I use plus the English focus they use.

1 - Wii sports resort

There is a game in swordplay where 2 players and need to 'slice random objects'. I have the students in groups, write down what items were seen and in the right order. Points are awarded to the winning team playing the game and the winning team who has the most correct items spelled properly. Focuses on writing abilities. (There are other games, yet I haven't been able to make them fit as much as this one.)

2 - Pokemon battle revolution

While I thought this was a risky move (at least with this age group in Canada), the boys LOVED this game. I began with a basic lecture on type matchups and elements (this may be from a previous class). Each group played 1 round against the computer using pre-made pokemon. During the battle I reveal the opponents type, they must then look at a handout of the pokemon and their moves and tell me which pokemon and attack to use. Depending on how well they do determines points. Focuses on reading + speaking.

3 - Samba de Amigo

A music game, much like DDR but for the arms. You use the wii motes as maracas. Each song has a pre-made handout where students must fill in the blank lyrics from the song played. A focus on listening and writing. Points awarded to the winner of the song and team with the most correct lyric matchup.

4 - Mii Channel

This, without a doubt, was the best game available. Supported with a lesson on physical attributes of the body, students must describe to the teacher how to make a mii for their group. Not only do they learn basic features of the human body (hair color, body size, etc) they also use vocab to navigate the teacher around the menu (next page, next row, next column). Focus on speaking.

5 - Cooking Mama

Currently looking into this game. However, I foresee a focus on communicating around a kitchen.

Those are currently what I am playing around with in my head. I was planning to save these for summer camp also, but it's such a good way to get the kids to be quiet if I threaten to take away Wii Day.
