My co-teacher suggested I buy my principala bottle of whiskey as a gift since I'm leaving.  Where could I buy a bottle?

Wow, seriously?

I've heard of teachers getting gifts from their employer when they leave but buying your principal a bottle of whiskey?

This is almost as funny as that time a recruiter told a foreigner to bring a bottle of Crown Royal when he landed because it is "Korean tradition"  ???

Seriously.  She suggested it.  I've been there two years and I'm going home.  I think I'll do it just to see how he reacts.   ;)

I would not spend the money unless they had gone out of their way to help you.

You are leaving.

Did I ask?
FYI, both my principal and vp have been very helpful.  One example is this fall when my waterheater stopped working.  When I mentioned it to my co-teacher she informed me it wasn't her job to call someone.  My principal called the repairman for me, and I heard he had a few words with my co-teacher.  That's just one example.  I realize I don't have to justify how or why I spend my $$$$ on them, but there are some good principals and vps out there.

Yeah, if they've been helpful there's nothing wrong with buying something.  My only advice would be to find out if they actually even like whisk(e)y and if they do, what kinds.  Because there's lots of really terrible, near undrinkable stuff for sale in Korea.  Like stuff that's much worse tasting than soju, yet still quite expensive.  So if they've actually been helpful get them something they may actually drink/enjoy.

If you want a really nice selection, you can find it at any of the higher end departments stores in the basement near the food section. They should be really helpful in picking something and then getting it giftwrapped for you for free.

You might also want to lean towards foreign whiskey. I've heard the Korean ones can be very hit or miss. I've only grabbed stuff from duty-free but stuff like Ballantines and Johnny Walker are very well liked, even the mildly cheap stuff.

I second duty-free.  The place that I buy wine at from the outside looks like they only sell wine but on the back wall there are what appear to be whiskeys and cognacs.  It could be that your local "wine" place is similar.

Good luck~
