Mind Your Manners
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:00:22 PM »
A few months ago, I posted a Mind Your Manners American Culture Worksheet.  I am following up with a Mind Your Manners American Culture Powerpoint.  I really want to emphasize slide 19 in my class to students, since it is still an issue.  I have an assignment at the end to have the students write about two polite and two impolite manners in their culture.  I hope that you enjoy!

Mlatte,

Good idea! Have you done this yet in class? How did it go over with your co-teachers? It seems like a lot of these mannerisms are things that Koreans do. I'm wondering if they'd get a little offended or sensitive.

I did a small manners class one day in my after school class.  It went really well, I just introduced different polite word and when to use them in certain situations.  It has worked wonders on the way the kids now ask for something from me.  Like my mother told me "Please" is a magic word.

I have not done it with my students yet.  I thought that I would introduce that some things that are done in Korea are considered impolite in the American culture and vice versa.  I will tell them that each culture has their differences, but that is what makes it unique and that we need to learn the differences in order to understand each other.

This is brilliant. Thanks for sharing! I have the hardest time dealing with bad manners at my school.

I would throw in a few more things Americans do that Koreans would find impolite as well, just to balance it up, If you show this in class I think your Co teacher is gonna be a bit offended.

As it is now, its bit like a rant via the medium of PPT.
