Another South African in Korea :3
« on: December 06, 2010, 07:48:09 am »
Decided to join after having this website reccommended by so many different teachers  ;D

I'm from Cape Town, South Africa, and am currently living in Gunsan and teaching at an all girls high school (the Gunsan Girls Commercial High School, to be more precise). I've been in Korea since July.

Really starting to miss good ol' SA right now!

I could realy do with some biltong and melktert right about now. Been here (Daegu) since August. Teaching at a very small middle school who's English ability is REALLY LOW, so I've had my work cut out for me.

Hi, you can get biltong from 'The biltong Guy'. Just google it or if you are in Itaewon ever you can get it at Scrooge's Pub.  The Biltong Guy also sells boerewors. You can phone this number too  010-3040-8935. His name is Chris at this number

Last week, I received a package from home which contained a packet of beef chilistix from Pick n' Pay. It has sated my longing for biltong - until next time, anyway...

The English ability at my school is really low as well. It really does make the job harder. Out of the 400 or so students I see every week, I have one student who is fluent enough to have a proper conversation with me (i.e. we can pretty much talk about anything, and I don't have to slow my speaking pace down with her at all). Her speaking ability is better than almost all of my co-teachers.

Thanks. I'll make a note of it since I am probably heading to Itaewon soon.

Novalis, my fellow Capetonian  :)

Welcome!

I could really do with some SA sunshine and a braai right now...  ;)

But don't worry, Korea has so much to offer and the rewards are plentiful. Been here one month and wouldn't wanna be anywhere else...

Any proper meat would suffice really.  I've heard a lot about the Biltong guy..think I should give him a call with Christmas coming up and all.

While I'm on the topic: Summer Christmas vs Winter Christmas?

And speaking of SA sunshine... craving a Cape Town summer now. The high humidity of a Korean summer does NOT agree with me (especially with my hair). I'm actually glad the weather is getting colder now. Can't wait to see snow!

Are there many anime fans here? I talk to a few of my students about it (they love that I love anime  :) and they always get a kick out of it when I know what characters and shows they are talking about). But their speaking ability is low, and I need some good conversation! I used to attend an anime club back home, and though I still talk to my friends over Skype, it would be great to find similarly-minded people here.

Welcome! Been here (Daegu) since August and it's been great so far. The food is the biggest thing that I miss though and need to somehow satisfy my cravings. Boerewors I can buy from the the biltong guy, sous I can make, but where do I get the maize meal to make pap?  :(

@Adean. Summer Christmas. Haven't had a summer Christmas in 9 years, so kinda miss it.

Oh and I forgot to add the good ole Klippies & Coke  ;D

If there's ever a braai in the Geyongsangbuk area (more specifically Pohang) be sure to post it on this site! Dying for some real (red) meat accompanied by a bottle of Beyerskloof pinotage....

I am a bit, though I'm not obsessively into it like some. I get the opposite reaction out of my students - but that's probably because I'll use it to choose someone or they're not confident in talking to me, so they go shy if I point out the character on their pencil case or whatever.

www.expatshop.co.za   :) the shipping is a bit pricey ... but if you convert it to won and you have a bonus coming up it's pretty good!  Hehe!  There's another place: elifefood.com - but they're not open yet :( - way cheaper!

I find that it does encourage some of the more shy students to talk to me. I now have one student who stays behind after every class so that she can talk about anime, and show me different clips and songs that she thinks I may like.

And the majority are always willing to talk about One Piece. Especially if you are a fan of Zoro and Sanji  ;)

Unfortunately I'm in the situation where if they want to talk to me, they have to grab me before I leave the room (often with the Korean co-teacher telling me to go with her) or they have to come to me in the language teacher's office - not great for the shyer students. Plus the more confident ones who do come to talk to me often get shooed out after a while by the head of department.

I'm not a fan of One Piece myself, despite almost everyone else I know loving it. Maybe between Naruto and Death Note I can cover most of the anime fans of both genders. ;)
