Teaching Aids?
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:58:40 AM »
Hi all.

My school has given us a budget to buy some teaching aids and material for the English department and I need some assistance deciding what to suggest. I am at an Elementary school.

Please could you let me know about your favorite teaching aids and what you use then for. Keep in mind we have nothing so any suggestion would be helpful.

So far we have small white boards and dice on the list.

Thank you

I've heard from many former/current teachers that having a nice, big stockpile of board games is a good idea... Many can be modified for the ESL classroom, apparently, and may be purchased at stationery/book stores.  :)

Boardgames are definitely a good idea. Props are another, you can different kinds of props and use them in so many ways! You could use them to practice role-plays, you do fun improvisational activities with your students or use it to teach different topics such as adjectives. Kinds of props could include animal hats, wigs, swords, capes, plastic fruit, vegetables or anything like that.
Another suggestion I would make is get lots of color paper, card board and felt. You can supplement lots of lessons with fun craft ideas, like using cardboard to make a sun visor if you're teaching a lesson on summer.
