Middle School - A Visit to the Doctor (Part 1)

Okay...

First I want to ask. Has anyone had compatibility problems with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. I've been working from 4 computers and had Korean errors flying at me from all directions. Though this may be because I saved to a flash and apparently you're not supposed to do that. Any advice?

Secondly, this is my first post so apologies if I [mod edit: make a mistake].

Lastly, Jeollomando... I stole your teaching plan template. I am currently organising / fixing corrupted files and I thought it was pretty.

As for the lesson, the PowerPoint game will be posted seperately due to maximum post attachment issues. The last worksheet should probably be printed on B4 paper, larger paper means more sentences and more space for doodling.

Some thoughts:
  • Some of us (myself included) work directly off of usb drives and I haven't heard of any problems.  Can you copy the file from the flash drive to the hard disk first and then open it?  Do you get the same errors?
  • Are the different copies of word and powerpoint the same version?  I had similar problems at my school but I was able to install the correct converter and that solved my problems.
  • Maybe there is something actually wrong with the file?

yea, i work directly off my flash and have done for years. Apparently you shouldn't though... also, apparently you shouldn't email *.ppt files unless they're zipped.

from the four computers, two versions are 2003 and two versions are the version before that. cheers for the links. i'd actually read through microsoft's site and downloaded an update for powerpoint 2003. it helped and i re-saved it somewhere new. though it's weird, the computers that files decide not to work on alternate. there doesn't appear to be a pattern or clue as to what the problem is... which makes me think i have a magical pixie trying to break everything. i should backup *.doc files as *.pdf's and pray for the *.ppt's

anyhoo, i'm being thrown out of school for the day. cheers.

This is a good lesson plan. I changed it somewhat.
I erased the sicknesses on the worksheet, and put the answers at the bottom.
Then I took up their answers with the powerpoint presentation.
Then we did the dialogue.

I used a couple of your things with Grade 1 (MS) today, although I changed them slightly to fit the chapter the students were doing in their textbook.  I first went through some of the activities in the text and then went through the powerpoint to see if they could fill in the blanks.  We then moved onto the "visit to the doctor" worksheet, and they created dialogues with their partners for 10-15 minutes.  Then I did a little bingo game, but instead of calling out ailments I'd go through the dialogue, and when I got to what's the matter I'd call on a student and let him/her choose anything on their card. 

Your worksheet gets my stamp of approval.  I will use a similar lesson with my other classes in two weeks.  To be honest, the kids were really disgusted by some of the pictures on the powerpoint, haha, so I might have to PG it a little more.  Maybe if I introduce vocabulary first, then show them the worksheet, then show them the powerpoint, the shock of seeing a monkey sawed in half won't be as great.   ;)

Just curious: what is red alert?

i have another monkey *.ppt on cooking vocab. if i can find it i'll post it up.
red alert is a *.ppt game included in part 2 of the post.

I did stuff from this lesson today, too.  On the worksheet I deleted the monkey getting cut in half and the monkey losing a limb, as students were truly horrified by them.  At the end of class I showed the powerpoint (because by now I had gotten them curious) and they were disgusted by them both, haha. 

Also, 질 is a crude word for vagina, something I was reminded of when I was having them listen and repeat "I have a chill."  That's also why you should never name your students "Jill."

Just wanted to bump this.

It's a very good lesson, and really popular with all the lurkers we have here, too.

I teach mostly from the school textbook so I can't use everything here, but I used the worksheet as a supplement to the activities in the book.  It's easily customizable in case you want to change the sentence pattern or some of the ailments.
