Pixar Animation Short Comic Activity
« on: December 07, 2010, 07:51:58 am »
This is just a short activity to have fun with the class.  Can take around 20 minutes or so.

First, open Pixar's "For the Birds" animation short.  Tell the class that there isn't any speaking in the clip.  Ask them to think about what the characters are saying.  Then show the clip.
Here is a link to the clip.  (it's HD, so if your work comp is a P.O.S you might need to find a lower quality version)
http://vimeo.com/8243280

After watching the clip talk about comics briefly.  Then pass out the attached worksheet.  It is a comic I made for the clip that has speech bubbles without any speaking.  Ask the class to be creative and funny in their creation of the birds' conversations.

This is a great activity.  Have you used it yet? If so, what age group did you use it for and how did it go?

Thanks

That's smart Jonfen.  :)

I never though of doing that with a video and comic life.  Gives possibility for a lot of things.
Carpe PM... ZzzzzZzzz ZzzzZzzz.

That's a really attractive worksheet, what program did you use to create it? I could see using that with a bunch of different films.

Thanks ya'all....

The program is called comic life, came with my macbook.  Nothing too fancy, t's pretty self explanatory.

I used it for Middle School 2nd Graders.  At first they were just writing a very literal interpretation of what they saw in the clip.  To help boost their openness to creativity, I made my own silly example and showed them first.

I was thinking this activity could be used with pretty much any clip.  Even foreign films

This looks wonderful.   I haven't used it in my classes yet, but hope to on Monday.   I have kind of borrowed from here and from another lesson from this site and made the ppt to go along with it instead of looking for the video on the net.   I hope this helps others.   Also, I took the JPEG and put it on the ppt to show the class what they will be doing.   Thanks again for the great ideas for class.

Sorry, I titled that incorrectly. This worksheet is for 'For the Birds'.

The answers are included for the first part (labeling the letters) so make sure you first delete them before you print and hand out!

Somewhere along the way, the previous English teacher downloaded this video onto my computer. So, if it's hard to play the video streaming, you might be able to find it on various websites to download the HD version of the video to play for your class. The HD version was downloaded to my computer from the previous English teacher. I don't know where he got it from.
Smile. Pass it on.

I used these shorts before and you're right the kids love it! I like what you did with the comic strip I'm goona try that next time. Originally all the pixar shorts were on youtube but eventually got removed. I found a Spanish(?) website that still has them all in HD, http://www.220.ro/.
Also try a short called Oktapodi on youtube. What i did, which works well for low levels, ie grade 1. is show about 4 or 5 shorts and then get them to design a DVD jacket for their favorite one -not much talking involved granted, but some writing skills. I'll try and post the ppt on the main page.

this worked really well for my middle school classes - thanks sooo much for sharing!

To take up a whole class with it, I gave supplementary vocabulary they might need (which would also work well for younger students like someone had asked about) and I had them work together in groups to create the dialogue. I then made them memorize it and had them act out their interpretation.
They were happy with it and had fun. I consider that success!
