But, I want to get dropbox on other computers (and have a few co-teachers start to use it too), but I can't figure out how to have them sign up/download the program without the web page.

Does anyone know how to get around it?  I have seen stuff on USB versions, but it doesn't allow you to sign up, just access your own files.

I will check out spideroak, but I use dropbox for everything so it'd be nice to have everything in one place...

thanks!

If you carry the regular installer on a USB, I seem to recall an option to sign up an account *inside* the install/tour screens, after getting it installed. I don't know if that's just a framed website, but you might check that out.

Why are they blocking dropbox anyway?
It seems to be a very business oriented  (and helpful) service.  Perfect for teachers sharing teaching materials.. like the cool box on their computers

I have never heard of dropbox (yet) used for piracy

There is one that I'm using and its called sugarsync

Here's the website

One advantage that is has over dropbox is that it provides 5G of free space

Not to dismiss SpiderOak out of hand, but wow... talk about clunky.

I think what I appreciate most about Dropbox is that once it is installed, I don't have to think about it again- even as a power user. SpiderOak seems to be trying to be too much all at once. In order to sync folders, I have to setup a "backup" first... which is different from a sync in what meaningful way to me, how? Nothing is particularly well-explained or clearly communicated either in the help files or interface pop-ups.

Upload speeds are atrocious, combined with the maddeningly slow encryption... I left my PC for 3 hours to sync (backup? I don't even know anymore) my Dropbox folder of 733MB... it didn't even make it to 50% uploaded. I tried again, this time on my unmetered/unlimited USA VPN, and it didn't make any difference in upload.

The whole "zero-knowledge" storage concept is really nice, but it doesn't help with simplicity or user-friendliness (eg, password changes are in-app only).

Seeing as there are a lot of people on Waygook that are less than tech-savy, I worry SpiderOak might be really confusing to them. :s
