KORUS FTA Goes Into Effect
« on: March 19, 2012, 04:00:01 PM »
KORUS (Han-Mi) FTA went into effect on the 15th... has anybody been seeing any changes in prices? Any predictions for the future? What will change? What will stay the same?

I have noticed the price of American oranges going down to more reasonable levels. I bought a bag of 8 seedless oranges for 5,000 won.

I'm hoping that fruit prices will drop in the coming weeks or months.  However, I'm not sure if the savings will be passed on to consumers or if retailers will keep prices the same and pocket difference.

I've read that agriculture commissions on certain states, namely California, are looking to export more to Korea since their prices should drop between 10 and 20%.  I'm adopting a wait and see attitude toward the whole matter.

Since Korea has a little, shall we say obsession, with name brands, many articles I've read have pointed out specifically that North Face clothing and luxury goods will not change in price.  Only goods manufactured in the US will have the tariffs lifted, not ones made by American companies in foreign countries.

I haven't seen any noticeable difference yet but my wife and I are both hoping to see some changes soon.  Particularly, we want to buy a soda stream.  The flavor packs are $5-10 in the US but 30,000 here.

If I wasn't living here I'd be totally against the FTA since I think it's imbalanced in Korea's favor.  While I'm here I hope to see an influx of American products, though.
