Does the KEB Visa check card work in S Africa?

Hey all;

I was told the KEB Visa card would work in SA, I just want to know if anyone knows for sure? I get paid while being in SA this December and I have this fear that the card won't work and I'll have no money.
As I only get my pay check at the end of the month and I fly on the 24th, I can't send the money back.
Has anyone used a KEB Visa card in South Africa and if so, from which bank did you withdraw?

No. The majority of Korean check cards don't work outside Korea I believe 99%. KEB only offers credit cards that work outside Korea. They want to charge interest rates just in case you skip town. The visa logo is very misleading and doesn't even work on online purchases.

on the same boat as you mel123. im going to SA in jan and i wanted to tap into the money coming in but it seems like im going to have to withdraw money and take it with me.

There are 2 different check cards through KEB. One says "valid only in Korea" The other says "global" On the back of my global one it says "Valid for overseas ATMs (must register FX transactions) but invalid for overseas purchasing merchandise" I'm not sure what FX transactions is... but it sounds like it should work in ATM's?

i have a KEB Global card.  it has an orb in the center with a wavy-checkered pattern.  I used it in the USA, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, but an ATM took it away from me in Spain.  It only works as an ATM card abroad, no online purchases, no store purchases.

I have used it in Korea to shop in stores and online.

I don't think that a KEB credit card will do you much good.  Unless you have worked at your current job for a year, you have to put down a 1.2mil deposit that you don't get back unless you cancel the card.

A much better option would be to set up online banking.  I have two accounts with KEB, one is for transferring money to my American account.  When I transfer money from my main account to the transfer account, the money goes into my American account, minus a transfer fee, which you would be paying if you wired money with a clerk.  I'm sure you could link it with your bank in a different country.

You can definitely get your money out of the country even if you aren't here, and no need to carry around tons of cash.

KEB check cards dont work outside korea only the Global Card
The best thing to do is to register for internet banking and then transfer your money that way. Also make sure you have a forex account, the one that when you transfer  money into the account it goes directly to your SA bank acc. I have done it many times it is easy and a life saver

I have a KEB debit card that says, "Only valid in Korea", but when I went home last year I used my card. I could only use it at the ATM's though, I couldn't use it as a credit card to pay for things. You might want to call the call centre though and just make sure. The number is 1588-3500.

Thanks guys. I have the global KEB card, but think I'm gonna set up internet banking on my account so I can wire money to SA if the card doesn't work for some reason.

I have a KB card and I was told by my bank that you need to register with the bank if you wish to use the card internationally. I did and am able to drawe\ money that way. I have heard that you can transfer money back to SA through NH bank. If you have internet banking you go to remittance and then you can transfer like that. The other alternative is to draw at the ATM ( which I think is what you are referring to) but then you need to register with your bank and your card needs to say Maestro or vISA on it. What I did was asked my bank for an extra ATM card and I sent it over to SA so my mom could draw cash to and put it on my SA account for me.

Just make sure it is a Global Check Card from KEB, they can change it if it is not, and you can use it at any Visa ATM in the world.

If you have the expats savings debit card with the visa on it it Will work. I used it last year. You just have to make sure you ask for authorization for it to be used in South Africa before you leave, and also that KEB is your main bank that you do all your international banking with. Other than that you are good to go!!! Have fun. I'm also gonna be in SA over xmas this year and i couldn't be happier. I can't wait to be in the sun and have a lekker braai
