SuperColorSuper Int'l Closing - Support & Fundraising
(1/1)
Super Color Super:
LETTER FROM SCS’s Founder-
It’s almost certain we won’t make concerts with international bands any longer. We will make the tours for No Age, Blonde Redhead and Asobi Seksu as we’ve announced previously, but none after these.
The reason for closing is low support from the public and local companies. There are not a lot of Indie fans in South Korea in general. And still most Indie/creative organizations, labels or bands do not support our project, which has been progressively advancing the scenes in Seoul and beyond more than any other before. Many suffer under old-fashioned minds and do not want to see things grow, or only see their personal projects as the most important- their own band, their friends’ band etc.
We’ve been laboring to push the scene forward little-by-little since I started SuperColorSuper almost 3 years ago. There has been a real impact because of our work. We’ve reach major media overseas, debuted 40 international Indie bands here etc. You can feel more optimism about things at the moment because of it, other projects modeling after us. We are thanked passionately by fans every tour. It has been beautiful.
We’ve only gotten spiritual compensation out of this, we don’t make money, and extra income is committed to bringing more bands over or setting up artistic projects like Super Sketch or G’OLD. Making no money is fine- but with low support for our amazing Spring Line-up, it looks like we are even going to lose quite a lot of money.
Personally – I should go travel to see my father. He had a heart attack, his first, in February when I was on tour with Vinyl Williams, which was devastating news. I have not been able to because I cannot afford to travel and SuperColorSuper takes all my time.
I’ve surpassed my goals entirely for SuperColorSuper, I didn’t even dream we’d be doing Mogwai just 2 years later after my first show and hitting the The New York Times, CNN, and all these major papers in Korea. We made this Spring Line-up beautifully, for a few weeks now it looks like Korea has an equal scene to Berlin or London, or where I arrived from, San Francisco
After we close this- people will again see how Korea was again before we started pre-2009. International Indie bands coming maybe once every 4 months and no cheaper than 75,000W a ticket, like Azure Ray was or Kings of Convenience (just 2 guys on stage with guitars, and thousands of fans- 88,000W really? Damien Rice 160,000W??). We were working to bring a lot more incredible bands- talking with Animal Collective, Atlas Sound, bringing back Mogwai, Das Racist and Gold Panda, but with the close of International shows, most likely they will not come, or fans will need to ready your bank account for a big ticket arranged by another promoter.
I’m extremely thankful for the history we’ve had, I’ve met inspiring bands, staff members, fans. I’ve been standing on stage at the very epicenter of some life-changing performances. It’s been adventure. It’s been war. I’ve loved it. Thank you to everyone who came to a show, or wrote about one or said nice things, or worked to put up posters and work the bar.
You can help keep it going- it’s all of you. If you can convince your friends to come see these shows it can help, tell your friends or any bands you know to support SCS.
Otherwise, I hope you join us to say goodbye at No Age, Blonde Redhead and Asobi Seksu, the final international SCS shows. We will continue with some local projects that are close to our hearts- Super Sketch, G’OLD Korea Vinyl, and some art projects we have going.
