High School - Making Comics

This is a mashup of a Virginia and an AlexMokpo lesson.

Comics & Cartoons:

• Native Speaker introduces the concept of comics and cartoons.   5 minutes.
• Native Speaker defines the difference between a comic and a cartoon. 5 minutes.
• Native Speaker performs Comic or Cartoon activity. 10 minutes.
• Students perform Comic worksheet (write dialog for a comic).  10 minutes.
• Students present their Comic worksheet. 5 minutes.
• Students perform Comprehension activity (draw a comic from a story). 10 minutes.
• Students present their Comprehension activity. 5 minutes.

Notes:

• Some kids automatically knew what to do when I placed the comic down in front of them; other had to be painfully explained that they had free reign over the story.
• Some kids finished their comic in five seconds while other took 15 minutes.  Some delays were intentional (and I dealt with this by informing the students that nobody leaves until everybody presents their comic) but others had the numerous eraser marks and pen scratches to show that they were in constant revision for the perfect comic.
• Boys really enjoyed acting out their obviously ludicrous storylines in front of the class.  The girls however had to be dragged kicking and screaming to read three lines.
• Most the time will be spent organizing the class room, especially during the presentation.
• The Korean word for comic and cartoon is usually the same.  It's important to start linking comics & cartoon to drawings and then go into the various differences.
• Slapstick humor comics make a more interesting class. Two sites that worked out well are Penny Arcade and Ctrl Alt Del.

For variety I created 6 blank comics from Penny Arcade and 6 blanks comics from Ctrl Alt Del.  All were placed in the Comic Worksheets.doc for my ease of printing & photocopying.  Some people were pretty amazed at my English erasing capabilities; it's very easy to do and I can help anybody who wants to do it with another comic.

Coming back from Chuseok this week I only had to teach 2 classes.  I really didn't feel like doing anything so I made them watch a video and gave them a small test.  It took an hour to put together (including the 20 minutes it took to watch the video the first time through) and it's brilliant filler but it has the paperwork to pass off as an actual class.

Comics & Cartoons: South Park

• Native Speaker introduces the South Park TV show.   5 minutes.
• Native Speaker hands out the South Park test and goes over the questions with class. 5 minutes.
• Students watch South Park TV show. 25 minutes.
• Students perform South Park Test.  5 minutes.
• Native Speaker goes over South Park Test with class. 10 minutes.

Notes:

• Turn the test into a competition by having the kids split up into groups, have them complete the test and then have them exchange their papers with another group.  The groups now mark their neighbors test.  The group that has the highest score wins candy.

I have a direct internet connection into my class room and played South Park Episode 11-3 (Lice Capades) with no problem using Internet Explorer.  Firefox does not work.

I had to deal with one odd class this week so I reused this lesson using a different video and a different activity.  It was EP10-8
South Park Make Love,Not Warcraft and I had a word search competition with the attached word searches.

I found an comic on the Archie website with Korean translation. My students are exam zombies now, so I don't expect much from them. Going to just read the comic together, talk about vocab, etc. Could also be used for a skit, if you have students who are willing to actually move. Then there's some blank strips they can create their own. Saw an activity like this already on here, but maybe Archie is better suited for the older girls.

i tried it and it went well in some classes.. but I did have an entire class that just wrote "so hot" "so hot" "i'm so hot" in every single word bubble...

I did this quick and dirty for a filler class.

Basically introduce what a comic is, and have the students make their own comic, then share with their friends.

Besides the foul language, the characters spoke too fast and a lot of my students had problems following it.
