yet another reminder that the educational culture here is breeding monsters. but what about the ilbo's ridiculous prescription for addressing bullying at schools?
The solution lies in the classroom. To stop school violence, children need to change, and that can only happen if their teachers change. How many teachers are really interested in helping their students change?
teachers have a fundamental role in the rearing of children. good teachers can have a positive impact on a child's emotional growth. but conspicuous by their absence in this little stratagem are the parents of bullies, who are left out entirely of the mending process.
it's absurd to suggest that the burden lies with teachers exclusively. moms here already outsource enough parenting to teachers while they tend to sale racks at the department stores. why does the ilbo neglect to even mention a role for them? maybe it's already written them off?
confusedsafferinkorea:
Yes, sad. Parents once again passing the buck to teachers. Same in every country though. Parents want to work and socialise but don't want the responsibility of raising their children. If the child turns out great they take the credit and if it turns out rotten they blame the teachers.
It is a no win situation for teachers.
wrinklebump:
it's just sickening to see the nation's most-read editorial page implicitly endorsing that attitude.
flasyb:
The amount of bullying that gets ignored in my school is absurd. Teachers only sometimes discipline for it. Students seem to spend their days verbally abusing the one kid in every class who is the target for all bullies in Korean and sometimes in English when they can.
That said, the parental attitude at home of "when they're at school, they're the school's problem" needs to change. However, "In Korea, we don't like to make the trouble." - teachers don't want to call parents unless they absolutely have to and parents will wonder why they're being troubled over such trivial matters as a little "horseplay".

Yeah, the eagerness to avoid taking responsibility whenever possible by all adults involved is feeding this vicious cycle.
