Travelling to Jeju

AnjaF01:
Hi everyone.

I would really like to go and see Jeju island. What way would you recommend travelling there? Fly or ferry?
Does anyone have any cheap places to stay that they can recommend?
Also, when is the best time in the year to go?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Flying to Jeju is pretty reasonable especially when booked in advance, so if you are near an airport it might be the way to go.  Ferries from the southwest tip of the mainland are nice, too, but they can take anywhere form 1.5 - 5.5 hours depending on which one you take.

Best time of year?  Depends on what you'd like to do.  If you want to swim, go in the summer..  However, from late July into August is the very busy tourist season when everyone seems to come to Jeju.  I personally like Jeju best in September.  The weather's still nice but the beaches are relatively deserted as it is no longer official "beach season".

There are a few previous threads about Jeju if you do a search, and some mention some good places to stay.  Check out:

For flights check out jejuair.net and airbusan.com :) They both have English sites and decent specials!

Flying would be your best option. JejuAir always seems to have reasonably priced tickets unless you go during peak season.

Keep in mind that public transportation on Jeju is next to nothing. So, unless you are going with a tour group, you really need to rent a car if you want to see everything the island has to offer.

Personally, I like going in the spring time. The place seems to get overrun during the summer and prices go up for a lot of things.

A great, cheap place to stay in Seogwipo is Backpacker's Home. The foreign community that lives on the south side often hangs out at the cafe out front.
