Wow. In complete agreement here, but as was said before, "Glad you feel proud of undermining another teacher." Honestly it doesn't make sense not to take the distractions away. I do any time it happens. They know that they must come to me and ask for it back in polite English as well as an apology. It doesn't really happen to the same student twice. The school takes the phones during the year though.

OP: I'd say take the notes and of course drill them with questions about whatever it was that you were trying to teach them. If the same students persist, make them teach class. The latter has been great for some of my "wild" boys. They ended up saying sorry and trying to pay attention.

Why are you letting them have phones in the first place. Cell phones should never been seen in the classroom, confiscate it.

Are you actually allowed to take stuff off students? I use my phone quite a bit in the classroom (as a student studying) to translate words and figure stuff out. If my teacher busts through a whole heap of stuff that I dont get, i'll just take a photo of the board and figure it out later.
If it makes noise then their expected to go outside the room, other than that why care?

I'm assuming you're an adult? And that you also don't have to wear a uniform, keep your hair cut above your ears and collar line, and not drink and smoke?

I think there might be some differences.

If its noisey or distracting,, sure, give it back after class. As a parent I would be thinking that you have no right to take it regardless of what their doing with it. If a teacher took it for that class though then no problem, if my kid came home without her phone because a teacher took it, I'm pretty sure I would understand why but your only going to hear the angry parent, why did you take the phone - ok - give it back, And what can you do? you can't keep it. Sure give it to another teacher to take the flak, chances are their just going to give it back as quickly as possible.

One native teacher took my cousins phone, said she could have it back at the end of the week, she does various things after school and my uncle makes her check in regularly. As above he understood why but he was still super pissed. I only work 2mins away so I went and got it before work, went to the classroom with her, unfortunately he tried to stand his ground, blah, blah, blah, call her father but give me the phone, still won't budge, guys making me late and all his kids are waiting.
10 mins of listening to him rant on I got bored, got another teacher to get it for me. Teachers don't get to hear the conversations at home, all this guy knew was some random kiwi guy demanding some korean kids phone back.

Unfortunately for him a lot of his students and co-workers know me, he didnt have a chance of winning so it's a bit of a never ending joke.

Did the kids learn a lesson? Sure, don't play with your phone in class, yeah right, they learnt to tell their uncle.

Did the teacher learn a lesson? Maybe not but I bet he was probably a bit shocked when the girl told him I was her uncle  :D

Well she might have learned the correct lesson if you hadn't gone in and undermined her teacher's authority like that. I'm glad it made you feel proud, though?

It doesn't matter if it makes parents angry or not. Part of a parent's job is to teach their children that a rule is a rule and if they break a rule, they have to face the set consequences, don't you think?

I have no idea what you're talking about with the whole, "Another teacher would give it back as as soon as possible," line. Our students' phones are confiscated at the beginning of every school day, and I know a lot of schools are the same, so where you got the idea that Korean teachers never hold on to students' phones, I have no idea. Have you worked at a public school? Or as a teacher at all? It doesn't seem as though you have, given that you think that students with cell phones in the middle of class is completely not distracting so long as it's not noisy.
