science vocabulary how to teach it so it sticks!
« on: April 29, 2012, 12:39:01 AM »
I use the attached template to introduce 6 vocabulary words  following this plan.
day 1:  Give the vocab sheet (top row is for 6 vocab words.  underneath I write a definition sentence with the vocab word as a blank, and I also add a second sentence with the vocab word blank used in context)  Student groups look at the words and discuss where each word will go. I call on groups to volunteer where each word goes.  The 6 large boxes below are for students to write each word and draw a sketch to help them remember that word.  I usually give this as an assignment.
day 2:  We usually review meanings of words and I make the kids say the words using funny voices.  It's corny but they get into it. Kinda like this:
Teacher:  Anything that has mass and takes up space is--matter.  say the word matter
students:  matter
teacher:  say the word matter like a rock star
students:  MATTER!
teacher:  anything that takes up space is--volume.  say the word volume
students:  volume
teacher:  say the word volume like an opera singer
students:  VOLUME!
teacher:  the smallest particle of matter is an atom, say the word atom
students:  atom
teacher:  say the word atom like a wrestler.
students:  ATOM!

you get the idea.  Then we usually share some of their drawings from the previous day.

Day 3:  Review the words again, then have the student groups come up with an action or motion to help them remember the meaning of the words.  they cannot use any words or souds.   Give enough time, then have students show their actions/motions for each word.  Teacher chooses which group motion works the best for remembering the meaning of the word, then asks all students to use that motion.  Go through all words, repeating the established motions for each word.  After introducing each new motion and repeating them several times, have a student come up and do the motion for any words, and the rest of the class calls out the word.  repeat.
day 4:  Have student groups review motions from previous day and word meanings from their vocab sheet, then give them a simple quiz.  I usually create a quiz of 6 matching definitiions, and 4 fill in the blanks using any 4 of the words.  You could do it any way you want.

These vocab activities only need to take about 5-10 min per day and I usually do two sets of vocabulary words per science chapter we're reading.
