Female Travelers
gfuerte:
Hello Everyone! Was wondering if there were any females who have traveled alone to different countries in Asia and what were their experiences?
Want to visit different countries during my stay here in Korea, but not sure if I'll have anybody to travel with me.
Any suggestions on where to go, or to stay clear of, if I travel alone?
Suza:
Traveling alone is fine as a female. Any country can pose dangers for both male and females alike. I have been to India, Nepal, China and Malaysia alone. This year I'll go to Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan alone.
I've never encountered any problems. Just always have your wits about you, avoid places late at night. When you arrive at a new destination try to arrive before dark, or have your accommodation pick you up. You'll know yourself from your own instincts when something is dodgy.
I am from the UK and I actually find areas of the UK more dodgy than most of the Asian countries I have been to.
Traveling alone is great. You'll meet lots of people on the way.

I never have a problem, but just make sure to keep your valubles close to you and keep a don't mess with me face on.

I haven't had any problems thus far.
I went to Malaysia alone for 8 days and had a blast. Then I went to Thailand alone and met up with a girl friend in Cambodia and we traveled Cambodia and Vietnam.
The most dodgy experience I had was in Kuala Lumpur when a man decided to follow me around for about 5 minutes. But I lost him pretty quickly and didn't feel like I was in danger. You just have to be aware of your surroundings.
If you are travelling alone and want to meet up with people it's easy to find couchsurfers all over Asia who will either give you a place to crash or just meet up and tell you a bit about their city/country.

I've read up on this a lot on Lonely Planet and other websites, as well as talking to better-traveled friends. Basically, the gist for Asia is that Japan/Korea/China, as well as Thailand and the "Indochina" countries are generally pretty good places for solo female travelers. Many, many women travel through these countries alone without incident, just taking simple and practical precautions.
India/Sri Lanka/Pakistan/Bangladesh are where I've read/heard the most complaints/scary stories from women traveling alone. Western women tend to be viewed as promiscuous/sexually easy in many parts of the world, and in South Asia in particular this can create a lot of unwanted attention for them. As I'm sure many posters will point out on this forum, many solo women still travel there minimal issues and love it--I'd just research potential problems and ways to troubleshoot them before you go.
I know I personally felt safer/less leered at in well-touristed parts of Thailand than I often do in Korea--Western travelers/expats are very common there and I never felt like I stuck out too much. If you haven't backpacked on your own before, Thailand is generally considered a great place to start.
