Bruno Mars - Grenade - short music class
« on: May 11, 2012, 11:39:39 AM »
Is there - or can we start - a 'Music' sticky?

I have a 'before school' class which the students elect attend so they are usually motivated and a relatively good level of English.  It's a nice class but it's only about half an hour long and often interrupted by announcements and students being dragged off to other meetings for 5 or 10 minutes.  'Listening to music' is a favourite way to spend the time but I find that to make it even vaguely educational (i.e. not just flipping through K-pop on Youtube) takes hours to prepare, not to mention the time it takes to find a song with lyrics worth listening to and aren't full of embarrassing words.

Given that the class is so brief and often fractured I would feel happier putting the effort in if I thought they were going to be used by someone else somewhere.  I'd also appreciate using other peoples' efforts too.  I've found one or two on here but it's seems to be a matter of trawling through.

Anyway, here's Bruno Mars, Grenade

I start by handing out sets of 12 pictures, cut up individually, get the students to describe them with as many words as they can.
First play (using MP3 only) of the song to connect words and pictures.
Second play (MP3) try to put the pictures in order.
Third play (MP3) with a copy of the lyrics.
Fourth play (PPT)with powerpoint to check order of pictures and check words/connections and elicit meaning of the song.
Fifth play ( Youtube) to just watch and enjoy video.

Do you think you could use this for a low level class? For the lower levels, instead of asking them to describe with as many words as possibly, maybe you could give them sentences to fill in the blank? That way they have a complete sentence to remember or write down and not just a word to remember. I can't see the powerpoint yet, but this idea sounds great. Also, if you used this song for a higher level class how do you think you could modify it? Would it be best to assume that the students might be able to write an extra verse to the song or something?

Thanks ~

Yes, for a lower level class just sorting the pictures and a gap fill is enough.  I use gap fills quite often for song lyrics, adding a word list box for the lower ability and a 'match the word to the meaning' for the higher ability so that everyone is occupied for the full lesson at the top of their skill level.

Writing an extra verse might be fantastic, but not for my rural middle school boys.  I think even the brightest couldn't do that.  This lesson is about as much as they can handle.  I dream of the day when I have classes that can write a whole sentence or pick out a rhyming word from a list.  :-[

Look like a great idea, especially for my middle school girls. Is anyone else having trouble opening up the power point though?

Oh no, it should be easy - it's just an old ppt version, problems usually come with pptx files.  Let me know if there are more problems and I'll try and upload an alternative version.
