Korean foods
« Reply #40 on: August 08, 2011, 03:15:09 pm »
Introduce the class to different cultures through the medium of food; class mates can try to understand the geographical and historical basis for certain foods being popular. Children can then practice language related to recepies and measurements and perhaps if the situation enabled actually easily write their own recepies or prepare meals together to make the learning more fun!
Enjoy

Strange Food [ Lesson ]
« Reply #41 on: September 30, 2011, 03:32:57 pm »
This is a lesson combining health & nutrition with strange foods. Prepare to get a lot of omg/daebak/heol/u-wa/chinguro(sp?) reactions at the end. haha.

Lesson Details
1. Video - Epic Meal Time: Turbaconepic (edited version)
2. Basic Nutrition - Review calories, carbs, fat and protein
3. Exercise - Briefly cover calorie expenditures for basic exercises
4. Global Calorie Consumption - Talk about how many calories different countries eat around the world and investigate the causes
5. Anorexia vs. Obesity - Define and explain the terms
6. How Many Calories? (Game) - Get students to guess how many calories certain foods contain and why junk food has so many
7. Describing Food - Teach students some very common words/sounds Westerners make to express their feelings towards foods
8. Strange Foods (Game) - Show students strange foods from around the world. Get them to figure out why these countries eat these foods.
9. Make A Strange Food - Students spend the remaining time creating their own strange foods and presenting to the class

Note: A lot of the information presented in the lesson is over simplified. I am well aware of this (did a year of Kinesiology in uni and certificate in personal training before switching to biz). Some may not like the idea of this, because it could actually lead to some unhealthy conclusions due to lack of comprehensive knowledge (e.g. fat = bad or low calorie = healthy diet). This is true, but I figure you've got to start somewhere...

I have used the theme at the 1st grader of high school.
Students really enjoyed because they like foods.
I think food riddle is good material and I am likely to use it.

I teach lower level high school students. Using the bingo activity and a long review you will be able to stretch this into two lessons. I scavanged the worksheet from someone else. Also some of the pics. Hope that's cool.

I just put together this power point to help my class understand the in's and out's of ordering food.
I teach at a vocational highschool so the level is a little lower.

American Food: The Hamburger
« Reply #45 on: November 25, 2011, 09:24:44 am »
Here's a culture-based lesson based on a textbook.  Not too difficult really.

Presentation, Handout and funny video.  About the history of the Hamburger and how it is an American food.  Comprehension based handout with questions.

The video I chose to show was "The Pink Panther - Hamburger Scene" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuUsuTOdNkA)

This lesson is followed on by "American Food: MacDonald's" (http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,25767.new.html#new)

American Food: MacDonald's

Here is a culture-based lesson based on a textbook.  Not too difficult.  Follows on form "American Food: The Hamburger" (http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,25762.new.html#new)

Hamburger game, handout and video.  About the history of the MacDonald's and how it has influenced American food.  Comprehension based handout with questions.

The game is silly and just to get students moving about the room.  Make labels of hamburger ingredients.  Stick them to the backs of students.  Then students have to move around the class silently and make a 'hamburger'.  First team to make a complete burger wins.

The video I chose to show was "McDonald's - History and Opportunities" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReIf6tYZNvM)

British Food
« Reply #47 on: November 25, 2011, 10:46:06 am »
This lesson follows on from American food: Hamburgers (http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,25762.0.html) and American food: MacDonald's (http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,25767.0.html).

I first showed the video: "British food best in the world" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGGbJEcUZsM)  Gets the kids drooling~~

The handout is made with MS Publisher so I can't upload in editable format, but there is the PDF. (PM me with your email address and I'll send it to you in .pub)

Then I show a clip from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone in the Great Hall with the banquet that appears with all the (British) foods on the table 46:14~47:14.  This links with the extract quoted on top of the handout.

The presentation was ripped from a prezi (http://prezi.com/s-qo2lc39pp4/copy-of-british-food/).
