English pop song recommendations
« on: May 18, 2012, 03:22:05 PM »
I've been asked to recommend  pop songs to sing for the English contest and I honestly went blank. The only thing I could think of was Jason Mraz I'm yours. My own music taste is kind of obscure so can't really recommend it for singing. I would like to steer clear of the Justin Bieber's and Westlife, however any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, to Lemon Tree.

Beautiful Sunday by Daniel Boone
Do re mi
something by the Beatles
Upside down by A-teens

All these have worked ok with my students.

Westlife (My love or Uptown Girl) would also be pretty popular if you can stomach it.

One of the Abba songs as Mamma Mia was pretty popular a couple of years ago.

"If I had a million dollars" went over well with my middle schoolers when I showed a youtube video at the same time that put up pictures of the things that BNL would buy.

What age are your students?  For my elementary school students, my co-teacher have picked out "Beautiful Sunday" by Daniel Boone for sixth graders, "Love Me Do" by the Beatles for third grade students, and "Baby" by Justin Beiber/"Let it Be" by the Beatles for fifth grade students.

Recently, we started "Reach for the Stars" by S Club 7, but that song firmly falls into the category of pop, so you might not be able to stand it!

I've just discovered Parry Gripp (he has a Wikipedia page if you care).

This was my gateway drug:

Bet you can't get it out of your head.

Anyway, he has put a ton of material on YouTube.  The songs are simple, and the music is catchy.  I haven't looked at them all, but I am sure there are a couple of clips I could use ("Do you like waffles?" and "I am a banana").  Plus there are lots of cute animals in some of the clips.

Some of them are quite inane, but I was thinking of doing cloze activities or listening for trigger words.  Most of them are short enough to be a filler at the end of a lesson.

Thanks this is a lot of help. I teach middle schoolers. I"m obviously not a huge fan of pop but this isn't about me it's about the students and I know they love that stuff so happy to hear about anything catchy that they will enjoy. Lemon tree haha I wonder if that band is still around or if they've gone back to their day jobs? I'm sure they'd be very surprised to know that every Korean kid knows all the words to their song.

At my middle school, we had an English Pop Song contest and I remember hearing "Take a Bow" by Rihanna (sp?) and "Falling Slowly" from "Once". Also, "You Belong To Me" by Taylor Swift was very popular amongst the 3rd Level girls.

ask your students what their favorite pop songs are.. I sometimes give my email address and tell my students to send me their favorite pop songs, or a list of favorite pop songs. then I make worksheets (fill in the blanks) out of the songs and they love it

do you know 'K pop star'? it is one of Korean auditon programs that ended a few weeks ago, and it was very popular. some of the contestants sang American pop songs like, mercy (Duffy), rolling in the deep (Adel), be be your love (Rachael Yamagata),  Killing Me Softly With His Song (The Fugees), etc . All of the pop songs from that program is now well known and kids love them. if you search the internet with 'k pop star (케이팝스타)',  you can find more songs.

Actually Adele and Duffy are both British but it's good to see teachers perpetuating the belief, Koreans already have, that all forms of English speaking entertainment come from the USA.  ::)

I am not sure if I got it right... what do you mean? Does english pop only mean popular songs in America? (I thought English pops include Britpops.... :-[) If it is an English pop song contest, I thought it should cover all the songs written in English. Korean people also know Duffy and Adel are both British, and kids that I teach love to mimic their British accent.  :-X

Not quite.  American pop songs come from America.  British pop songs come from the UK.

"English pop songs" could mean "songs from England" or "songs sung in English".

"American pop songs" means only "songs from America".

You wrote "American pop songs", but you gave two examples of British singers.

Does this make it clearer?

I think any song by Madonna would be great, like "Girls want to have fun". Really cute and old school.

"Girls Just Want To Have Fun" is Cyndi Lauper.

I do think this would be a good song tho, also anything by The Beatles, especially their earlier songs.
