Boxing gym membership
« on: May 21, 2012, 01:22:02 PM »
I recently found out that there is a boxing gym right next to my apartment and was considering joining it with my gf. It's 80,000 a month per person and is open from 10am to 10pm. Those of you that have done boxing or something similar in Korea, can you tell me if this is a good deal or is the price a little high? Thanks!

I can't comment on boxing specifically, but my kumdo club is 90,000 per month so is comparable in price.  Don't know if that helps or not.  One of my friends tried to join a local free boxing gym but wasn't welcome so couldn't go, but he never found an alternative.

Oh that sounds pretty cool, too. How often do you go and what is the instruction like?

I love boxing! - Easily my favorite sport.

One of the reasons boxing thrives is because it is notoriously cheap. I've seen really solid gyms offer 40USD a month for a 3-4 class a week schedule. I've also seen people charge like 80-100 bucks for 1 hour of 1 on 1 time with a specific trainer.

80kwon a month is what? -rougly 65-70 bucks? Not bad at all, but it's kind of hard to say not having seen the facilities or not knowing anything about the gym's training reputation. Just make sure you commit to it. That'll be the key to feeling like you're getting your money's worth out of it.

Well, to be honest I want to do it more for the intense exercise rather than the skills that will be obtained but that will definitely be an amazing benefit. Also, I did BJJ in America for three months before I had to stop because the 40 min drive to the gym every day got to be too much. That was awesome though and a loved it but unfortunately they don't offer that anywhere near where I live. It's jsut Taekwando, boxing, and kumdo.

<- is jealous.

I've been looking for a boxing gym in my area. There was one a couple blocks away, but it shut down even before I arrived.  >:(

Thanks for the price comparison, though. I think I've found one that I'll be able to bike to, and now I have a better idea of what to expect price-wise.

I go up to five days a week, although I could fit in 2 sessions most days if I wanted to practice the basics more.  I also attend tournaments every month or two (two this month).  Instruction will depend on a) your teachers' English ability b) your Korean ability or c) your ability to watch and mimic to figure out what to do.  I had an advantage as I'd done kendo in other countries before so know most of the basics and only really get stuck on the Korean names for exercises.  Also, as a complete beginner you will not need any equipment other than possibly a jukdo (around 20K?) while you practice basic footwork and cutting.  Later on you can buy a hakama and gi (I forget the Korean terms, sorry).  And, if you keep going for longer you can consider getting your hogu (armour).

Any more specific questions feel free to ask.

Be aware that if you want to do the international kumdo/kendo style (ie, you can continue in most countries worldwide) you want Daehan kumdo 대한검도 not the other forms (such as haedong which is apparently quite different).

Has Muay Thai not made it to Korea yet?  Very popular here in the UK.

Muay Thai is all over the place. If I wanted to do kickboxing, I would have many options available to me even though I am outside of Seoul. One of my girl students actually competes at the national level here in Korea.

There is a Muay Thai gym near Busan National University of Education. Send me a pm if you're interested. It's 100,000W a month. Coaching is solid and is by far one of the best places to train in Busan. Other "Muay Thai" gyms are more like taekwondo gyms.

Thanks bigdac, I'm in the UK one day I will get my documents stamped and head over! Perhaps Busan as I like it there, but all my friends are in Seoul.

Standard price for boxing gyms seems to be about 100,000 a month.

Go, you'll enjoy yourself. Even if the trainers don't speak English (they probably won't) form and movement can be taught by other means.

As you progress the language barrier might become more of an issue, but that should give you a bit more incentive to get learning the language!

There is a boxing gym in the building next to my apartment too haha.  I haven't gone there but my jiu jitsu school charges 100,000 a month.  I will say that it  has been a lot tougher learning without much English instruction.

On another note, do you drive a rex?

Seems good.  I went to one for 100,000 per month.  He charged us 90,000 because my wife and I signed up together.  Lots of one on one training and at my place some of the other guys worked there in exchange for free membership and they always gave us a lot of instruction.
