Foreigners Commit 8% of Murders in Korea

(1/5) > >>

CDW:
"About 8 percent of all murders in Korea are committed by foreigners, although they still account for a much smaller proportion of the population....

"Violent crimes such as murder or rape made up 31 percent of the crimes committed by foreigners in Korea, compared to 22 percent of the crimes committed by locals. Seoul police said it is looking into measures to deal with this trend, including bolstered patrols in the Itaewon and Guro districts, which have large foreign populations."

That's interesting. There are a lot English teachers and US soldiers in Itaewon. There is a China town in Guro. I wonder which group of foreigners is committing most of these violent crimes.

Frankly, it's probably not English teachers or soldiers.  Americans, for instance, have a much lower crime rate than the average for all foreigners put together.

Interesting percentages but what are the actual rates (how many murders per 1000, foreigners vs Koreans etc)

For example, if there are 4 murders in 2011 and then 7 in 2012, that's an increase of 75% in the murder rate. Statistics about small demographics are often misleading.

I remember reading an article that talked about a huge rise in the increase of marijuana usage among foreign teachers. Something like an increase of 50%! Turns out it was just a few extra people got caught that year and it skewed the statistics. At least it made a good story about foreign teachers importing their foreign immorality.

That being said, when you invite the "foreign hordes" to come and work for you, they tend to move to certain areas, set up their own communities and import their own culture and ways. Plus, rich people to move abroad to work in factories, kitchens and as labourers. It's no surprise these increasingly non-integrated immigrants might commit more crimes.

Interesting.  I really wish they would close the military base in Seoul since the American military has some serious gangs issues now a days.  This could be why violent crime is increasing but ultimately it doesn't matter which foreigner does it we get lumped into the same category.

Notice how the article says "accused of murder," not 'convicted.'   ???
